1850 Census Kaukaulin, Brown County Wisconsin

 

The following is the transcribed Census pages for the area known in 1850 as Kaukaulin which included what is known today as Buchanan and Kaukauna in Outagamie County and Holland or Hollandtown in Brown County. This area was part of Brown County in 1850 as Outagamie County wasn't created until 1851.
This Census was taken between September 11 - 19, 1850 by Lorenzo Brown.
At the end of the Kaukaulin pages he wrote;
White Males - 400
" females - 303
Colored Males - 1
" females - 0
Total 704

Dwellings - 121
Families - 126


Most of the columns are self explanatory, the numbered columns are described;
Column 1 - Dwelling - houses numbered in order of visitation.
Column 2 - Families numbered in the order of visitation.
Column 8 - Value of Real Estate owned.
Column 10 - Married within the year.
Column 11 - Attended school within the year.
Column 12 - Persons over 20 yr's of age who cannot read & write.
Column 13 - Whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane.
Last Column - I added this column to list the correct spelling of known surnames.
