5. Mary Powers married Patrick Coyle at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in
Neenah on November 1, 1874. Patrick was born in County Meath, Ireland. He is listed as a
day laborer on the 1880 Census. His obituary states that he was a resident of Menasha
for 20 years, so he probably immigrated sometime before 1873. He died on December 10.
1893, probably from influenza. Mary remained in Menasha and raised her three sons, the
eldest Thomas lived with her until her death on December 29, 1922. At that time, the
newspaper reported she was the oldest resident of Menasha. Both Patrick and Mary are
buried in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Neenah. Though the 1900 Census reported that Mary
had given birth to 6 children, only 3 survived infancy. They are;
5.1 Thomas E. Coyle was born July 4, 1877. Thomas never married. He worked as a
papermaker all of his life. He lived with his widowed mother for many years in Menasha.
It is known that he worked in both Alaska and in South America, where he developed
Malaria. He died October 8, 1941 in a hospital in Green Bay, Wis. He was buried at St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church cemetery in Neenah, Wisconsin.
5.2 Joseph R. Coyle was born July 15, 1879. On June 28, 1906 he married Metha Miller in
a Presbyterian church in Appleton. She was the daughter of Richard Miller and Marie
Helen Graety. Joseph worked in various jobs for the railroads, his marriage certificate
lists him as freight inspector, the 1910 census lists RR cashier and the 1920 census
lists RR bookkeeper. According to his daughter in law Loretta Coyle “he first worked for
the railroad, then was in the trucking business, then was a salesman for McMaster-Carr,
then was postmaster at Menasha from 1936 to 1951.”
Joseph and Metha had two children;
Richard Thomas Coyle born October 17, 1909 in Menesha. On September 2,
1933, he would marry Dorothy Knoll in Chicago, IL. Dorothy was born on May 25, 1911,
also in Menasha. They had one son, Richard Lee Coyle who would first marry Susan
Wucherer on December 28, 1968 in Milwaukee. Susan was born November 23, 1937 in
Milwaukee. Susan (Wucherer) Coyle died on Christmas day, December 25, 1992 in
Milwaukee. Richard had one son by this first marriage, Christopher, who was born in
Waukesha, Wisconsin. Richard remarried in 1995 to Sue Wagner.
Thomas Walter Coyle born October 15, 1918 in Menasha. He married three
times. His first marriage was to Evelyn Nenning in Dubuque, Iowa on April 30, 1941.
They divorced in 1946. On October 10, 1947 in Neenah, he married Patricia Letter. She
was born on December 2, 1925 in Appleton. Thomas and Patricia had three children;
Robert who was born in Neenah, Wisconsin and would marry Susan
Schulz. They have three children;
Jeremy who was born in Neenah and is married to Salli Gleasner and
has three children; Dylan, Zachary and Morgan.
Elisabeth who was born in Neenah and is married to John Christian.
David who was born in Neenah.
Daniel who was born in Neenah and would marry Lisa Martini.
they have two children; Caleb and Emily.
Maureen who was born in Neenah and would marry Douglas Armstrong.
Patricia (Letter) Coyle died on November 7, 1976 following a courageous battle
with cancer.
In July 1986 Thomas married Loretta Rea who was born in Merrill,
Wisconsin. They enjoyed their retirement for many years in the area until
Thomas W. Coyle passed away at age 85 on March 4, 2004 in Menasha.
Joseph
R. Coyle died on June 18, 1969 in Menasha. Metha (Miller) Coyle died on July
10, 1950.
5.3 Martin Coyle was born April 23, 1881. He was living with his widowed mother in
Menasha at the time of the 1900 census. Sometime after that he went Washington State,
where he met Hannah Buckland. On December 15, 1906, their daughter, Leona Coyle was born
in Olympia, Washington. Martin Coyle died 6 years later on May 9, 1912 in Tacoma,
Washington. Leona would marry Winslow Gilbert sometime after 1930. They never had any
children.

Gilbert died in Tacoma on July 26, 1974 and
Leona
(Coyle) Gilbert died in Tacoma on July 23,
1979.
