4. Patrick Powers married to Catherine Finnel had 5 children
4.1 Richard Powers born May 15, 1862. Richard Powers never married. He was a farmer his
entire life, and he lived most of his life in the same house with his parents. Sometime
between 1910 and 1920 he moved with his widowed father to live with his sister, Mary
(Powers) Fox and her family. In the 1920 census he is listed as a retired farmer. He
died of heart disease at 80 years of age on December 14, 1942. He is buried next to his
parents in St. Francis Catholic Church cemetery in Holland town.
4.2 John “Jack: Powers born October 24, 1863. Much can be written about John (or Jack,
as he was often referred to) Powers, he was definitely one of the most “colorful” men of
the Fox River Valley in the very late 1800’s and early into the 1900’s. His name was in
the local papers often, usually about some legal dispute he was charged with or having
with a neighbor, or for his well known “pugilist” capabilities (he was a boxer). Local
lore of the Holland town area also refers to him as “Yellowdog” Powers, the reference
meaning he was as faithful as that old yellow dog.
On July 3, 1888, he married the neighbor girl Helena Rohan at St.
Francis Catholic Church in Hollandtown. Helena was born on June 20, 1886 the daughter
of John Rohan and Catherine Holland.
4.3 Martin Powers born January 1, 1867. Martin must have died as an
infant as he is not listed in the 1870 census when he would have been 3 years of age.
His baptismal record at St. Francis Catholic church lists that he was born on January
1st and baptized on January 7th 1867, his baptismal sponsors or godparents were John
Dorrey and Ellen Flanagan, neither of which appear to be related.
4.4 David Powers born April 26, 1869. David also must have died as an infant as he is
not listed in the 1870 census. His birth record in Brown county lists he was born on
April 26, 1869 to Patrick and Catherine Timnerly (sic) of Holland town. No death record
had yet been found.
4.5 Mary Powers born June 24, 1870. On November 23, 1892 she married Michael Fox at St.
Francis Catholic Church in Holland town. Michael Fox was born February 19, 1859 in
Holland town, the son of John Fox ????????? and Mary Ann Keating. In the Kaukauna Sun
newspaper dated November 25, 1892 it was reported;
“The marriage of Mr. Mike Fox, one of the well-to-do farmers of Askeaton and Miss Mary
Powers, one of the most accomplished young ladies of Buchanan was solemnized at St.
Francis Church Wednesday morning Rev. C. Delowe officiating. After the ceremony the
bridal party repaired to the home of the brides parents Mr. & Mrs. Pat Powers where a
grand reception was given them during the day and night and many costly presents were
bestowed upon the young couple. The bridesmaids were the Misses Winnie Glasheen and
Winnie Ryan, cousins of the bride, and the groomsmen were John Fox and Andrew Flatley
cousins of the groom. The young couple will make their home in Askeaton. If their joys
be as plentiful as their friends wish them, happiness will always surround them.”
Michael and Mary were farmers in the Askeaton area of Holland town,
sometimes referred to as “East Holland.” They would have 11 children; Catherine born
about August 1895, Adeline born July 1896, Edward born September 23, 1897, John born
June 7, 1899, Walter Thomas born April 9, 1900, Richard born July 31, 1902, Bridget
Alice born February 2, 1904, Esther Ellen born April 12, 1905, Florence born May 15,
1907, William R. born May 22, 1908 and Viola born January 13, 1910. Michael Fox died
????? in 1947. Mary (Powers) Fox died on August 16, 1954. They are both buried at St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church cemetery in Askeaton, Wisconsin.
