Her father, mother and sister, Johanna sailed from Bremerhaven, Germany to Baltimore MD in 1882.They arrived in Loretto, TN on 18 Feb 1882 and lived there for 8 years.On 15 Mar 1890 they moved to Freeport MN. Esther was the first of Catherine's delivered by a doctor. At that time she was told she had one good lung and one lung the size of a two year old. Catherine had diabetes and died of complications of that disease.

All of their children were born in Holland Wisconsi n. They moved to St. Cloud MN during the winter of 1895 because they d id not have enough land for their growing family. In the spring of 1895 t hey moved to a farm near Duelm, MN. Bernard was killed that summer by r un away horses while cutting grain.Bernadine later moved to Spokane Wash. to live with her unmarried son a nd daughter Joe and Minnie.
