- DE PERE- A rural West De Pere couple, Mr. and Mrs. John Smits, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday by attending a high Mass of Thanksgiving at 9 o'clock in St. Boniface Church.
They were married in the same church Sept. 19, 1905 by the late Father Schmitz.
Mrs. Smits is the late Johanna Schampers. She came to this country from Holland at the age of six with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Math Schampers. Her husband, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Smits, retired from active farming 10 years ago.
The couple has four daughters, Mrs. Elmer McVey of Wausaukee, Mrs. Irvin Krueger, of Laona, and Mrs. Tony Minten and Mrs. Harvey Leloo, both of West De Pere, and two sons, Norbert of Preble and Marvin, De Pere. Nineteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren were also among the guests at the celebration, which included dinner for 180 at the Smits home. Friends and family came from Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Clintonville and Appleton.
