    Biography
    • Bio: Herman's in laws, Carl Grimmann and his wife Louise Dillman, were friends of Kaiser Wilhelm I. Herman's wife Mathiulde, remembered being a flower girl at one of the Kaiser's weddings and occasionally touring in his vehicle.
From approximately 1868 to 1885 Herman was the Head Paymaster of the German Army. Through the years he became more and more disappointed with General Von Moltke's exploits of war and the creation of the Second Reich. He found the time was ripe for a new beginning and secretly made plans to leave the country and move to America. He and his wife had 5 girls and three boys while living in Germany but only five of their eight children sailed with them to New York and all immediately moved to Chicago. One daughter had died before thet left and to other girds decided to stay in Germany with their Grandfather Karl Kemp. Four more children, three girls and a boy, were born while they lived in Chicago. Iin 1900 they relocated to Appleton, Wisconsin with five of their children, Charles 19, Max 16, Alfreida 'Freida' 15, Herman Jr. 13, and Luella 5. Three children born in Germany, now in their early twenties decided to stay in Chicago and there is no record of a six year old daughter moving to Appleton so it is presumed she died in Chicago.
Herman Sr. became the Plant Superintendent for the Wisconsin Malt and Grain Company that was located on the corner of Superior and Packard Streets and in addition to being a large company it had an elevator that was at least eight stories high that could be seen for miles. Herman's son Charles was a foreman for the same company.
According to Rose Kromer, wife of Herman Kemp Jr. Herman Sr. was a very stern contemptuous disciplinarian. His hands were always ice-cold and his jaw rarely relaxed.
He wore a toupee and family members say no one ever saw him without it on, (He is not waring it the profile picture taken from a family photo). He was a very studious individual and for that period pof time was quite well educated. He always eat his meals 'First and Alone'. After he was through eating his wife and children could eat. After eating his dinner he always sat in a large captains chair he favored and would study a Websters Dictionary. He was gregarious, tenacious and prudent. From verbal accounts, Herman was a deeply private man with a cultivated persons of anonymity. He was a master
tactician who reflected an image of being discreet, hard working, a self-effective coordinator, manager and father. At times he would entertain all the 'Big Shots' in Appleton by inviting them to bashes either at the Appleton or Conway Hotels. He would never rtake his wife along to any of these dinners.
In 1918 Herman Kemp Jr. died and Herman Sr. invited his daughter-in-law, Rose Kromer Kemp, and his two grandsons, Wesley 4 and Clifford 8, to move in with them but she
declaimed because of Herman's stern demeanor and moved in with her father George Kromer
      in Kaukauna, Wi.
In 1925 the company that was founded in 1891 went out of business and Herman Sr. started working for the city. In the Fall of 1928 while working at the city barn, Herman
stumbled over a shovel handle and dislocated and fractured his shoulder and a week later developed pneumonia. He died on November 1st, 1928 survived by his wife and five of his twelve children.
