  KILLED BY TRAIN - PATRICK McHUGH THE VICTIM At an early hour on Saturday morning last, a horrible accident occurred on the Milwaukee Road crossing west of the village of Hayton, whereby Patrick McHugh of Chilton town, lost his life and James Loughrin was seriously if not fatally injured by being struck by the northbound freight strain No. 65. McHugh, Loughrin, Clement Mangan and Will Greaney had attended the masquerade ball of Ecke's hall. At about four o'clock in the morning, the four boys left Hayton in a top buggy to drive to this city. When within a few rods of the track, Mangan discovered the freight train coming and told Loughrin, who was driving. Instead of stopping the horse, Loughrin seized the whip and struck the animal attempting to cross the track before the train reached the crossing. The engine struck the horse and threw it some sixty feet. The buggy was completely demolished and the occupants thrown out. Mangan and Greaney escaped without injury and when they got on their feet and saw the wreck of their rig, and their companions lying on the ground, they were so frightened that instead of asking help at a farm house near by they started for this city. Mangan came to his home on School street, bare headed and greatly excited and told his father, James Mangan of the occurrence and saying that McHugh and Loughrin were dead. Mr. Mangan hastened to the scene of the accident and found young McHugh lying a short distance from the track. Upon examination he found McHugh's neck was dislocated. His attention was called to Loughrin by the groans heard underneath the buggy. He lifted the top and found Loughrin still alive. Mr. Mangan then hastened to the home of Louis Franke, who came to his assistance and together they conveyed Loughrin to the house. A messenger was dispatched by Drs. Luce and Greengo. Upon examination of Loughrin, a severe cut some four inches in length was found on the back of his head. The young man was unconscious and remained so the greater portion of Saturday. Saturday evening he was conveyed to his home in this city and at present writing he is still in a comatose condition. The remains of Patrick McHugh were taken to the undertaking establishment of August Roethke and them conveyed to the home of his mother, Mrs. Margaret McHugh of Chilton town, where they lay in state until Monday morning when the funeral took place from St. Augustine's Catholic Church in this city. Patrick McHugh was born in Chilton town, August 26th, 1878. His death is a sad blow to his widowed mother, relatives and friends and the sympathy of everyone goes out to them. An inquest was held on Saturday afternoon. The jury rendered a verdict that McHugh's death was caused by the negligence of the driver of the rig.
