  Mercedes "Mercie" Bowers, Kaukauna, age 90, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at St. Paul Villa in Kaukauna after a lengthy illness. Mercie was born May 9, 1917, in Appleton to the late Joseph and Emma (Klarner) Hassmann. She graduated from Appleton High School with the class of 1935. On August 31, 1940, Mercie was united in marriage to John A. "Jack" Bowers sharing 66 years together until his death in December of 2006. Advertisement Mercie was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Appleton, was a member of the Christian Mothers and volunteered many years for the St. Elizabeth Hospital Auxiliary. She is survived by two daughters: Susan (Patrick) Doherty, Hilbert; Mary Jo (Robert) Steckelberg, Menomonee Falls; her son, John (Kim) Bowers, North Carolina; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jack, daughter Sally Schaefer, brother Joseph Hassmann and her sister Sister M. Philothea SSND. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 31 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 404 W. Lawrence St., Appleton, with Father Larry Abler officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Internment will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
