  He was a quiet man by nature, given to inordinate patience in all things he did. With this quality of patience also came enormous tolerance. His expectations of his children were set by example rather than articulated instruction. His expression of affection was made manifest more by the acts he did for others than by speaking his feelings. Although, as he reached the age of retirement he became more able to say what he felt. He loved through giving of himself. He was meticulous in record keeping. And his frugality was undoubtedly the direct result of having grown up during the depression. He seemed tireless in his ability to repair anything mechanical; he seemed tireless in all endeavors. I rarely saw him at rest, except perhaps on Sunday afternoons after church and lunch, when he "napped" in a chair in the living room. Sometimes, he might even doze off in the middle of a Packer game. Then John or I would shout "touchdown" just to watch him come to startled alertness as we laughed. One of my earliest memories of my father is the first Christmas in the "new" house, probably 1953. Dad carried me, in the middle of the night, from my upstairs bedroom to the downstairs bathroom and back again. Over his shoulder I recall the lighted Christmas tree in the living room. This warm indelible memory leaves me with a recollection of my father, never later contradicted during his life, as a gentle, caring man.
