      Hi Jay,
I saw your info. on World Connect and noticed you have some of mu Harrison family listed. I'm descended from Samuel and Susan Brighton Harrison thru their son, John James. Didn't see their names I don't believe, but did see their son Richard who married Mary Garvey. And a grandson Samuel A. who was a son of Henry Harrison. Henry was the first son of Samuel and Susan.
I would be glad to share any info. I have that you might need and maybe you have info. I don't have, if you'd be willing to share. I have some family photos also. What I don't have is anything on the family of Samuel Harrison, our immigrant ancestor. And would dearly love to learn that.
      Thank you.

      Hi Jay,
Thanks for your quick response. Is DePere in Brown county included in the Fox Cities? The Harrison family moved to DePere in 1847 or 8. They were in the area that became the town Glenmore. I've read Samuel Harrison, father of Richard, and his family were among the first settlers in Glenmore. He died in Oct., 1862
at the Battle of Corinth, MS during the Civil War, but his family continued to live in the DePere area. The GAR post was named after Samuel.

Samuel Harrison enlisted in the US Army on 21 Jul, 1842 in Buffalo,NY. He and Susan may have lived in the Buffalo Barracks and had firsttwo children, Mary and Henry, there. He had enlisted for five yearsand the third child, John James, was born in Mackinac, MI where therewas an Army post also. The last part of Samuel's five years was duringthe Mexican American War. He was discharged 21 July, 1847, at Pueblo,Mexico.

Samuel was given a miiltary land warrant because of his five yearsservice and he used it to purchase 160? acres of land in De Pere,Brown Co., WI. Four more children were born in De Pere. He was afarmer.

When the Civil War started Samuel raised Co. F, of the 14th Reg. atFond du Lac. He was a 1st Lt. and later made a Capt. He fought at theBattle of Shiloh and then was wounded in the leg during the Battle ofCorinth, MS. His leg was amputated, and although he seemed at first tobe recovering, he died on 18 Oct., 1862 from gangrene. He was senthome and buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in De Pere. In 1883 the GARpost in De Pere was named in honor of Samuel. His daughter, Mary, wasactive in the Women's Relief Corps.

Henry and Richard also served during the Civil War, and possibly JohnJames. Susan received a pension from the government.

      Mr. Robinson:--
A brave man has fallen,--I have this evening received the followingtelegraphic dispatch:
      Cairo, 22 Oct.
Meet the body of Capt. Harrison, at Oshkosh, Wisc.
      22 Oct. A.S. Scott
From the above, we suppose the Captain's death was the result of the amputation of his leg. It is sad news for his relatives, as well asthe men of Co. F., for the Captain was greatly beloved by them. Hespared no pains to add to their comfort. He was a brave man, andfaithful in the discharge of his duty, always kind and courteous toall with whom he associated. He has left a wife and seven children tomourn his loss. It was painful to witness the agony of the bereavedones when they received the sad tidings of the death of the husbandand father. His body will arrive here the evening of the 22d. Capt.Harrison was 41 years of age. E.A. Cooley

      Oct. 26, 1862 Sunday morning
We all regret Capt. Harrison's death very much; it seems sad after hewent through the battle and had such a narrow escape that his life wasnot spared. Even with the loss of his leg he would be of greatassistance and of course a great comfort to his family. They havesuffered a severe loss and should have the sympathies of the wholecommunity. We were very much cheered with the expectations of hisrecovery, but his sudden death doomed us all to disappointment. Ourloss in the recent engagement was tremendous in proportion to thenumber of men engaged.
