  Leonard "Shorty" Vannieuwenhoven, 86, Green Bay, passed away late Tuesday evening, February 15, 2011, at the Jack and Engrid Meng Residence of Unity Hospice. Born December 1, 1924, in Green Bay, he is the son of the late Fred and Rose (Hujet) Vannieuwenhoven. Shorty married the former Dolores Bessert and she preceded him in death. He later married Betty (Williquette) Besaw and she preceded him in death. Shorty faithfully served his country in the US Army during WW II. He was employed as a truck driver with Green Bay Packaging and Schneider Transport until his retirement. He is survived by four children and their spouses, Gary and Mary Jo Vannieuwenhoven of Suamico, Cheryl and Mike Schneider of Appleton, Kathy Gerlach of Green Bay, Rick and Chris Vannieuwenhoven of Kewaunee; 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; two step-children and spouses: Sandy and Winn DeGroot, Yvonne and Roger Gay; one step daughter-in-law, Susie Besaw, all of Green Bay; 9 step-grandchildren and 16 step-great-grandchildren. Also preceded in death by one brother, Roland and a step-son, Charles Besaw. Private family services were held with MALCORE (East) Funeral Home assisting the family. Shorty's family extends a special thank you to the caring staff of Unity Hospice.
