  1909 Aberdeen Daily News dated 8/07/1909; Horse Runs Away and 4 Are Hu rt - James Ringrose and party are victims of accident last evening. As t he result of a runaway accident last evening about 8:30 o'clock Mr. & Mr s. James Ringrose, their neice, Miss Loretta Ringrose of Chicago, and L. C. Trow of St. Paul, a guest at the Sherman Hotel, are suffering injuri es more or less severe. Mr. Ringrose sustained a cut several inches long a cross the top of his head which required several stitches to close and Mr s. Ringrose was badly shaken and bruised. Miss Ringrose escaped with on ly a few scratches but Mr. Trow is the one injured th emost. He sustain ed a badly spained back and injuries which will confine him to bed for a m onth or more. The party was cut driving last evening with a horse and carr iage from a local livery and they were driving on Railroad Ave, southeas t, near Jackson Hardware company building, when the horse took fright a nd ran down the avenuetoward Main street at a considerable rate of spee d, which was increased in spite of the efforts of the men who were in t he front seat to stop the horse. The animal tore across Main street and r an west until reaching the corner of Railroad avenue and second street sou th, when it attempted to turn the corner and th acarriage was overturned w ith a crash, the occupants being thrown to the ground with force. Help w as speedily at hand and the srtuggling people were assisted from their dan gerous position in proximity to the still excited horse. They were remov ed to the Sherman Hotel and Drs. Johnston and Robert Murdy called, who wor ked over them some time before all were made comfortable and the exte nt of their wounds ascertained. Today, all were reported to be doing as we ll as could be expected. Mr. Ringrose is confined to his bed yet, as is Mr s. Ringrose, the latter being somewhat dazed from the shock, though realiz ing everything going on about her. Mr. Trow as above stated sustained t he worst of the accident and his wife was wired to come from St. Paul, a nd is expected to arrive tonight. That the results were not more serio us is considered lucky as at a rate of speed at which the animal was goi ng when the rig overturned caused onlookers to fear that some would be fatally injured.

  From Early History of Brown County, South Dakota; Page 36. Aberdeen was named for Aberdeen, Scotland, the birthplace of Ale xander Mitchell, the president of the Milwaukee road. Assured by the new s urvey in 1880 eager settlers hurried to come from the railhead, among th em S. H. Jumper in his wagon bed who is reputed to have been the fir st to have slept on the townsite. Other first arrivals included James Rin grose and William Elliot. One early wagon train comprised 50 horses a nd 75 men. Page 51 The Sherman Hotel, a huge frame structure for its day, gave t he town a gala occasion at the opening banquet and grand ball on Nov. 4, 1881. James Ringrose, the owner, was a legendary figure in the community a nd the hospitality of the house became known throughout the Territory. Th is was fostered by the four sisters of the host for they were active in t he management. A boarder in another hotel changed to the Sherman because t here he could use silver knives and forks instead of steel.There was soon constructed on the west and south sides of the Sherman Hot el a large balcony with supporting posts on the sidewalk. From this balco ny the Rev. James H. Kyle gave his famous address on July 4, 1890, which r esulted in his election to the South Dakota Senate.A brick addition was added to the hotel in 1887 and burned in 1906 and aft er another fire in 1926 the present structure was built. The hotel is n ow the property of Mr. Ringrose's son, Maurice, and his daughter, Mrs. Margaret Hart. Page 198 Picture

  General James Ringrose, o ne of the most prominent early settlers of Aberdeen and a pioneer hotel m an of te city, died yesterday morning at Riverside sanitarium in Milwauke e, where he has been since last December. His death was caused by complica tions of diseases brought on by paralysis. He has been gradually falling f or the past year since in early December has been in Milwaukee for treatme nt. Mrs Rimgrose has been with him since his recent illness. The body wi ll arrive here Tuesday morning on the Columbian and will be accompani ed by Mrs. Ringrose and probably by his daughter Mrs. Margaret Ringrose Ha rt. The body will be taken to the home of his brother, P.M. Ringrose, 3 17 South Kline st. Funeral services will probably be held Wednesday morni ng at the home, following which Father M. Dermody will conduct a high ma ss at Sacred Heart church at 9:30 o'clock. Internment will be in the Sacr ed heart cemetery in the family lot, where his father and mother, wife a nd other relatives are buried. These arrangements are not definate and m ay be changed. The active pallbearers will be life long friends of Mr Ring rose, as follows: Patrick Feely, Patrick Cully, James Kehoe, Patrick Burn s, John Cavanaugh and William Elliot. The honorary pallbearers will be Fra nk Tracy, Ipswich, Harry Holby, S.H. Jumper, H.C. Beard, F.B. Gannon and H enry Lockington of this city. HIS EARLY LIFE James Ringrose, son of Mr & Mrs Maurice Ringrose, was born in county Clar e, Ireland, October 8, 1848. When he was but a boy of two years, the fami ly immigrated to America and settled first in Connecticut. In 1851, the fa mily came to Wisconsin and resided there for some time. When he was sixte en years of age, Mr. Ringrose left Appleton and the next few years of h is life were eventful ones. During this time he traveled quite extensive ly and saw a great deal of the country. He visited California and for so me time was a sailor on the Great Lakes and worked himself up to be the ca ptian of a vessell on the lakes. He came to Black Hills of South Dakota fr om California in 1877, and spent two years in that ???....(too blurr ed to read)... Fargo in 1879, where he remained for a year then came to Br own county, taking up a homestead four miles southeast of Aberdeen in 188 0. After filing on this piece of land he went to Casselton, ND. where he r emained until the following spring, when he returned to Aberdeen. CONSTRUCTS HOTEL HERE Immediately upon his arrival here he purchased the lots at the corner of T hird avenue southeast and Main street and immediately started to build a h otel, the Sherman. This land at the time he purchased it was nothing but r aw prarie, but his long foresight made him a wealthy man in years to com e, for this corner is one of the most valuable in the city. The lumber f or the construction of the hotel came in on the first train over the Milwa ukee and as soon as it arrived th eground was broke for what was destin ed to ne one of the largest hotels in the northwest. The building was rea dy for occupancy that fall. He continued the hostelry as it was original ly built until 1887, when he bulit the brick part on the north half of h is lots. This brick building was 75 by 140 feet and burned in the fi re of the fall of 1906. After the fire the lots lay vacant for over a yea r, when the present structure was started, one of the finest hotels in t he state. BUILDS PRESENT SHERMAN After the fire Mr. Ringrose went to California, where he spent the wint er and returned the next year and made preparations for rebuillding. Whi le th elots were vacant he was offered a large sum of money for them but h ad his mind made up that he would give Aberdeen a first class hotel and st arted the construction on the Sherman, which was opened to the public in O ctober 1908. He took an active part in the business for three years aft er the hotel was finished and then retired.Mr. Ringrose was married in 1884 at Neenah, Wis., to Miss Anna Gavin a nd to this union three children were born, Maurice Ringrose of Los Angele s, Cal., Mrs Margaret Ringrose Hart of Ray, N.D., and one child who di ed in infancy. In 1892 Mrs. Ringrose died and was buried at Sacred Heart c emetery.In 1882 Mr. & Mrs. Maurice Ringrose, father and mother of the deceased ca me to this part of the country and a year later Mr. Ringrose died and w as buried in Sacred Heart cemetery, a part of his original homestead and w hich he donated for a cemetery. He was the first to be buried in the pl ot of ground. In 1904 Mrs. Ringrose passed away and was buried there by t he side of her husband. James Ringrose leaves five sisters and one broth er to mourn his loss: Mrs. Catherine Fife, Mrs. Isaac Lincoln, Mrs. J.H. J ackson, all of Aberdeen; Mrs. Nellie Hartley of Colorado Springs, Colo., a nd Mrs, John Hardy of Appleton, Wis., P.M. Ringrose of this city was his o nly brother, Mr. Ringrose was married the second time to Miss Anna Kimmi tt of Ipswich in the winter of 1904. Mrs. Ringrose lives to mourn his loss . WAS MADE GENERAL General James Ringrose received the title of general from Governor Chur ch in territorial days when he was in charge of the commissary departme nt of the Dakota National Guard and he retained this title through his lif e. His death removes from the community one of the most liberal men the ci ty has ever seen. He was a true booster for the city from the time he ca me here and established himself in business he has been at the head of a ll movements for the betterment of the city. Father Du ran, pastor of the church, officiating. The contracting couples were Mi ss Annie Kimmitt of Ipswich and James Ringrose of this city, propriet or of the Sherman House, and Miss Lulu Foster and William Kimmitt, bo th of Ipswich. One bride and one groom are the daughter and son of Mr. & M rs John Kimmitt of Ipswich. Mr. Ringrose's bride was for some time employ ed in this city as bookkeeper for J. F. Kelley & Company. Mr. & Mrs Ringro se will pass through this city this evening on their way to Chicago f or a short wedding tour, after which they will return to this city.
