  Family History Researcher Mary fairchild; RE Michael Durick Mike, (son of Michael & Honora), may have been as young as 12 when he joined to serve in the Civil War and perhaps age 16 when the war ended. He wrote to family that he was returning home, and that they should not expect any more mail from him. He never returned home, and his sister, Catherine Durick - Wittlin sought information from the U. S. Government to no avail and had no records that he even existed. She speculated that he may have been wounded and in the hospital when he last wrote. ~ Many genealogy records and family trees also fail to recognize his existence, but census records provide proof of him as a child. ~ It is not known whether he was Union or Confederate. On both sides, boys often volunteered or were recruited for service when they were technically "too young ". Often boys lied about their age. War records may have been subdued or destroyed by bombs/fire? At what age, and at what date he entered service is not known. He may have served in some other capacity, other than as a soldier, such a drummer, water boy, cook, etc? In general, it seems that at the war's end, the population on both sides had been so traumatized by that awful war that they cared little about records and images of it. (One source mentioned that vast numbers of glass plate photographic images were used for glass greenhouse structures.) ~ Many young men, in the war's final months, began deserting and going home. Every possible scenario is open to speculation. ~ [To add to the mystery, Mr Thompson's notes refer to "a son of Michael drowning, but do no specify which Michael. In the same note, it is said "his grave is empty", but whose grave is not clear. See Scan 12] I am hoping you can shed some light on this missing boy, that I am just becoming aware of.
