    Biography
    • Charles A. Fieweger, pp 809-810 Charles A. Fieweger, secretary and treasurer of the D. W. Dean Co., manufacturers and jobbers of butter and cheese, Appleton, Outagamie County, by virtue of his progressiveness and pronounced business ability, though yet a young man, deserves more than a passing notice in this work. He was born November 3, 1861, in Menasha, Winnebago County, WI, a son of Julius and Caroline (Mahn) Fieweger, both natives of Breslau, Germany, born within a short distance of each other, Julius in 1827, the youngest of five sons and two sisters. Carl Fieweger, his father, was a miller by trade, to which Julius was reared, following the same in after life, in connection with millwrighting. In Germany, he built mills propelled by wind or water power, chiefly gristmills, but on arriving in America in 1853, and locating in Milwaukee, WI, finding no work of that kind, he learned the trade of wheelwright, which he worked at one and one-half years. In 1855, he married in Milwaukee, Miss Caroline Mahn, who was born in 1831, and came to America in 1852 with her brother Hirum. After marriage, Julius Fieweger and his young wife moved to Menasha, making the journey with an ox-team. Here in one end of their dwelling he opened a wagon shop, but after a couple of years located where his shop now stands, and where he still carries on his trade. For three years, he was a soldier in his native land, and his is the only member of the family to come to the United States. He is recognized as a very benevolent man, was one of the original organizers of the Concordia Society, a beneficent institution on Menasha, in which he has always taken a lively interest, holding therein several offices. He has also held various municipal positions, the office in his case invariably seeking the man. Eight children were the result of his marriage with Caroline Mahn - five sons and three daughters - of whom are yet living: Julius F., Joseph L., Anna M., Charles A., William H. and Caroline; Delia died in infancy and Edward died at the age of twenty-two years. Carl Fieweger, their grandfather, was a man of stern qualities, strict with his children, though very kind-hearted and was possessed of a strong, robust constitution. Charles A. Fieweger, the subject proper of this sketch, was educated at the common and high schools of Menasha till the age of thirteen, after which he attended night school only. The first trade he took up was carriage painting, at which he worked three years, and then learned that a wheelwright in his father's shop. At the age of seventeen, he received the appointment of messenger for the bank at Menasha, and at the end of eight months was promoted to teller, a position he held for over five years, impaired health compelling him then to resign. Proceeding to Colorado to recuperate, he remained there one year, at the end of which time, having regained his usual health, he returned to his home and there remained sox months. In 1885, he went to California, where, in San Francisco, he spent one year in a grocery house, then moved to Coronado, San Diego County, where he filled a position as receiving clerk for a short time. We next find him in the same part of the "Eureka State" engaged in the manufacture of fruit boxes, as secretary, treesurer and manager of the Coronado Fruit Package Co., in which capacity he remained nearly our years. Again returning to Mehasha, he embarked in the butte and cheese business, but at the end of one year came to Appleton where, in 1893, he organized the D. W. Dean Co., manufactureres of and jobbers in butter and cheese, of which he is secretary and treasurer. In May, 1888, Mr. Fieweger was married to Miss Mary Schneider, who was born in Mehasha, WI, daughetr of John and Mary (Buechel) Schneider, natives of Germany and early settlers in Menasha, where Mr. Schneider condusts a sash, door and blind factory; they reared f family of eleven childern, of whom eight are yet living. To Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fieweger has been born one daughter, Naomi L. Our subject and wife are members of the Catholic Church, and in politics he is a Republican.
