  Mrs. Julia Bates Dead Mrs. Julia Bates died Thursday evening at 8:30 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ralph Williams near Binghamton. Mrs. Bates has been ill for over a year, and the past few weeks has been confined to the bed with a malady which was incurable. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 12:30 from the house with burial at the Bovina cemetery. Rev. Tucker of Seymour will conduct the services. SOURCE: Black Creek Times, Black Creek, Wisconsin, 18 Dec 1919 Mrs. Julia Bates Mrs. Julia Bates passed away Thursday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ralph Williams near Binghamton. The funeral was held from the house Tuesday, Rev. Tucker of the M. E. Church conducting the services. She was laid to rest in the Bovina cemetery. Julia Elizabeth Smolk was born in Liverpool, Medina county, Ohio. She was the daughter of Lyman and Elizabeth Smolk. Her parents moved to East Bovina in 1867 and settled on a farm where she resided until she was married to Alex H. Bates on Nov. 12, 1884. They purchased a farm one mile from Shiocton and lived there 26 years. She was a member of the Congregational church since 1890. She leaves to mourn her loss, three children. The oldest daughter died in 1889. The three surviving children are Roy Ellsworth Bates of Oshkosh, Lyman Gilbert Bates of New London and Maud Janette, Mrs. Ralph Williams, of Black Creek. Her father Lyman Smolk and one brother, Byron Smolk, of Appleton also survive her. Mrs. Bates has been a patient sufferer for several months and has been seriously ill since October 18th from a cancerous growth of the thryat. [sic](throat) In spite of the cold weather and bad roads a large number of people assembled to testify to the esteem in which she was held.
