  Family History Researcher	Power was originally one of the foreign names which were introduced into Ireland at the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion, but it has become one of the most common names in Ireland. It is derived from the old French word "povre", meaning poor. The Norman Powers settled in County Waterford in the 12th century and it is there and in the adjacent counties where the name is still most prevalent today. The Powers claim that their forebearers include members of both English and French royalty. Our Power family originated from County Tipperary and probably the southern section as that is closer to County Waterford. Our first known Power generation would be William and Mary Power who were both born and died in Ireland. Their names were found on death certificates of 2 of their children who died in Calumet County, Wisconsin, which is the actual location of the Power farm as we know it today, but they originally owned land in Brown County, Wisconsin as they appear in all the censuses there in the Towship of Holland, Brown County, Wisconsin.
