  DIED AFTER A BRIEF ILLNESS Although not entirely unexpected the death of William B. Minahan which occurred at 2:00 o'clock Wednesday morning was a shock to his old neighbors and friends in this city and vicinity. On Thursday morning of last week while Mr. Minahan was returning from the post office to the Central House he was stricken with paralysis and a few hours later was taken to St. Vincent's hospital, at Green Bay, where he could receive treatment from his sons, Drs. R. E and John Minahan. The most favorable reports were received here regarding his condition. His brother, Patrick, visited him at Green Bay Monday and upon returning stated that he had regained consciousness and was able to carry on a conversation although complaining of severe pains in his head. His friends were greatly encouraged by his improvement and were hopeful for his permanent recovery. Tuesday night however, he had a relapse and passed away. With the death of Wm B. Minahan Calumet County loses one of its most distinguished citizens and ablest men. He was closely identified with the progress of the county for nearly fifty years and had more to do with the upbuilding of its schools and the advancement of education in general that any other person within its borders. Mr. Minahan was a native of Ireland and was born at Inishkae, County Mayo, in 1834. At the age of twelve years he came to America with his parents and located in New York State. He remained there a number of years and was married there. In 1858 he came to Wisconsin and located in Sheboygan County where he remained a short time and then moved to this county, settling on a farm in the town of Chilton, three miles west of this city. Though a sturdy pioneer who worked hard in clearing the land an developing his farm, he never lost sight of the supreme object in his life, to educate himself as thoroughly as it was in his power, and to that end he spent the hours that should be given to rest in study. He had great natural ability and the result of the course of study which he arranged for himself and pursued diligently was a well rounded-out and educated man. His ability and mental attainments were widely known and he was recognized as one of the leading educators of the state. In the early seventies he was elected superintendent of schools of Calumet County and served the county in that capacity for a period of twelve years. In politics Mr. Minahan was an independent republican. In 1896 he was a staunch advocate of the election of William J. Bryan and contributed his time and voice on the rostrum, as well as the product of his pen, in support of his candidacy. He also supported Robert M. LaFollette for governor in his usual vigorous manner, doing all in his power toward his election. This fall at the solicitation of his friends he consented to run for congress in this district as an independent candidate and was making an active canvass of the district when stricken with paralysis. In 1902 his wife died and since that time he has made his home with his sons at Green Bay and in this city. He was the father of a large and interesting family of six sons and four daughters, all of whom survive him, his sons being prominent profession men in both law and medicine. The funeral will be held on Friday with interment at Green Bay.
