  Biography	Metoxen, John 1770 - 1858 Stockbridge Indian leader, b. Stockbridge, Mass. He was educated by the Moravians at Bethlehem, Pa., and in 1785 joined his tribe at their new location in New Stockbridge, N.Y. In 1817 or 1818 he led portions of the tribe to new lands in Indiana, and in 1822 joined the main band of Stockbridge in Green Bay, Wis. The tribe soon settled on the eastern shore of Lake Winnebago at Stockbridge, Calumet County, and here Metoxen became a powerful spokesman for the Indian interests. A leading orator and reliable translator, Metoxen's speaking ability won him the title "Old Man Eloquent." He was a leading layman in the Presbyterian mission church at Stockbridge, and rendered valuable service to missionary Cutting Marsh (q.v.). He lived at Stockbridge until his death. Colls.
