  History of Northern Wisconsin
  EGIDIUS NELLESSEN, wagonmaker and blacksmith, Chilton. Born in Prussia, Germany, Feb. 12, 1822. While there he learned his trade, and in 1843, came to America, with his father and brother. He went to Erie City, Pa., and after a short stay there, he came to Wisconsin and located in Washington County, where, in 1848, they pre-empted land, the farm being in Marytown, where they lived. He moved to Chilton in 1854. This country was then but thinly settled, and he was among the first. He started the second blacksmilh shop in the place, and worked on the first mill in Chilton, which is now in ruins. He is established in a good trade. In 1847, he married Miss Toole, of Prussia, Germany. They have five children - Gertrude (now Mrs. Ball), Henry B., Nicholas, Evar and Anna. They are members of the Catholic Church.

  Our citizens learned of the death of Mr. E. Nellessen, one of the pioneer settlers of this city, which occurred at his home on Saturday last, with deep regret. The deceased was born in Prussia, Germany, Feb. 12, 1822. He learned the blacksmith trade at that place and in 1843 came to America with his father and two brothers. Settling at Erie, Pa., he worked at his trade, part of the time for the government and later on moved to Wisconsin where he was married, at Milwaukee, to Mary A. Tooke. In 1848 he and his brothers came north and preemped land in the vicinity of Marytown. They lived on this farm until 1854 when he moved with his family to Chilton, then called Stantonville, and built a small blacksmith shop on what is now Main Street. Here, like Longfellow's Village Blacksmith, "Week in, week out, from morn till night, You could hear his bellows blow; You could hear him swing his heavy sledge, With measured beat and slow, Like a sexton ringing the village bell When the evening sun was low." The little wooden shop was in time found too small for the volume of business which came to him and he built the large brick structure now occupied by Mr. F. McGrath. He worked in this building until 1895 when he disposed of his business to its present owner, and retired from active life to spend his last years in quiet at his home. With one exception, his family of six children all live to mourn his death. The funeral services took place on Tuesday last at St. Mary's church and were very impressive. The remains were borne to their final resting place by his grandsons, three of his great-grandchildren carrying flowers as the last tribute of their love. Among the people from abroad who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Nellessen, Mrs. F. X. Kloety, Mr. A Marshalk, Henry Bell, John Bell and Rudolph Nellessen, all of Milwaukee.
