    Biography
    • The home of my childhood was among the green hills of Vermont. I was born in Weybridge, Addison Co. Vermont on the fifteenth of August 1829. My father and mother were born in the same town, lived through life and died there and were buried on Weybridge Hill. The village is surrounded by mountains and in the distance Mount Mansfield can be seen, its summit covered with snow till mid summer.
There was a nice church in the village, a store, a wagon shop, a blacksmith shop, a saw mill and my father's woolen mill. It was first settled by Quakers and was called a Quaker Village. The Quakers had meetings every Sunday for many years when I was a small girl. I remember going to one of those where all the men sat with their hats on for over an hour; then without saying a word they shook hands and went home. The Quakers have long since left, but their burying ground remains on the bank of Otter Creek, though none of the Quakers have a stone to mark their grave.
My father lost his woolen mill by fire a short time before mother's death and after rebuilding, his means were exhausted so that he had to teach me to do the many kinds of factory work and I was at work in the mill when only twelve and could do most of the work that had to be done.
When I was seventeen years old I applied for a school in the district where my father was born. It was Dist. 4 and we spoke of it as the stone school house. My friends were surprised that I would attempt to teach, but I got the promise of the school. Uncle John was one of the directors.
At the time there was no such thing as examinations and certificates. When I learned there were to be examinations I was frightened but could not back out so I attended the examinations and received my certificate. I had twenty pupils that first summer and received a dollar a week. The next two summers I received a dollar and a half. A man was hired for the winter months who was paid fifteen dollars a month.
When I was twenty years old my father went to California (1849) Mother was willing since two of her brothers were going and many others from neighboring towns. Father was quite successful but never became rich. He staid six years and though he begged that I remain at home until he returned, I was never at home with my father again. I married and had gone to Appleton, Wisconsin before his return. I married D. Huntley."
