  Ray S. Bender, age 87, of Appleton, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 21, 2004 at Appleton Medical Center. He was the husband and best friend of Florence (Miller) for nearly 59 years. Father of the late Susan (Larry) Fettig and Dr. Ray (Christina Keppel) Bender of Mequon, WI. He is also survived by niece Shelley Shorb and nephew Mitchell Baker of Washington, DC, niece Kay Focht of Mechanicsburg, PA, nephew M. Lynn Bender of Altoona, PA, and niece Phyllis Dively of Honolulu, HI, his half brother Cletus Miller of Sedona, AZ. Ray was born June 6, 1917 in Claysburg, PA. He graduated from Hollidaysburg (PA) High School and attended Zypars Technical College in Altoona, PA. He joined the US Army in 1942 and was a member of the Second Armored Division. Ray fought in North Africa and Sicily. He participated in the Normandy invasion, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was a member of the Army of Occupation of Germany. He holds the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Fourregiere and the French Jubilee of Liberty medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of Master Sergeant. Ray rose to the position of Executive VP of Sales in his 39 years at Appleton Machine Company (now Metsco Paper). He retired in 1985. An enthusiastic musky and walleye fisherman as well as a voracious reader, Ray devoted his leisure time to these activities and maintaining an impressive array of well-used bird feeders. He also put considerable time into the writing of his WWII memoirs.He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Appleton, Waverly Lodge #51 Free & Accepted Masons, and is a Life Member of the Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industries (TAPPI). He is a TAPPI Fellow and was awarded the TAPPI Medal for his outstanding contribution to the area of paper finishing and converting. Ray was preceded in death by his brother Lester (Thelma) and his sister Beulah (Robert) Baker. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 28, 2004 at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel with Rev. John McFadden officiating. Interment will take place at Highland Memorial Park. A memorial fund has been established for the Glenwood School, 18700 S. Halsted St., Glenwood, IL 60425. Husband, Father, War Hero, Friend.
