Like thousands of other young men and women who came of age during World War II, Maynard Morse left his home and family to serve his country. Like Morse, they grew up not with the teen-age pleasures we take for granted today, but surrounded by strangers and sickness, danger and death. Some of their stories are repeated down through the generations, but for other veterans, it takes some years to be able to look back to that time with perspective and understanding. With Memorial Day approaching, Morse wrote a memoir of his years in the Navy, and shared it with The Current. "I always wanted to do that all these years, but you know how it is, you keep putting things off," Morse said. "I'm 75 now, and I finally had enough time. I thought it would be nice for my children to have." Morse has three children, David Morse and Eva Fink, of Appleton, and Paul Morse, the police chief in Kaukauna. "He'd talk about it occasionally, when we'd see a picture in a photo album of him in the Navy with his buddies," said Paul Morse. "There wasn't a lot of detail; he'd just say he liked being on the ships, and that sometimes it got lonely." The elder Morse's wife, Doris (Mero) Morse, originally from Manistique, Mich., died in 1982. Maynard's companion for the past 10 years has been Gloria Magolski, 68, of Appleton. "We love each other very much," Maynard said. "She's had a pacemaker and heart bypass surgery, so I visit her in the hospital for now." Many veterans who traveled overseas with various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces say they experienced more of life during their years in the service than they have at any time since. Unless those stories are written down, they will someday be lost.   Morse, Maynard H. "Lefty" Maynard H. "Lefty" Morse, formerly of Kaukauna, age 79, passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2005 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. He was born in Hulbert, Michigan on November 8, 1925, son of the late Burton and Marie (Martin) Morse. After high school, he entered the United States Navy in 1943, and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was proud to have served as a member of the Navy, and had seen most of the world by the time he was twenty-one. His military service brought him membership in the Electric City Post #3319 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Following his Naval discharge, he returned to Michigan and married the former Doris Mero in 1949; she preceded him in death in 1982. For many years, Maynard was employed as a machinist at Badger Northland in Kaukauna. He will be remembered by many as an active softball player who played for countless area teams over the years, and also enjoyed fishing, boating, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. He is survived by a daughter: Eva (Norbert) Fink of Appleton and their daughters Connie Fink and her fiance Daniel Bromwell and Christy Fink and her special friend Jack Wager-Smith; a son: Paul (Carol nee Meyer) Morse of Kaukauna and their daughters Jennifer, Amy, and Alisha Morse; a son: David Morse of Appleton and his daughter Jennifer Marie Gassner; a great-grandson: Hunter Bromwell; a twin brother: Gaylord Morse of Menasha. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Jay in 1981, his wife in 1982, his special friend and fiancee for the past ten years Gloria Magolski in 2004, brothers Melvin Morse and Peter (Gladys) Morse, sisters Mary Lou (Elwood) Derouin and Jessilyn (Victor) Hanson, and a sister-in-law: Kathryn (nee Mero) Morse. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, May 16, 2005 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. There will be a parish prayer service Monday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
