  Couple donate nearly $4M to Appleton's Lawrence University APPLETON A couple who met at Lawrence University more than 75 years ago have donated nearly $4 million to the college, one of the largest contributions ever in the school's history. The gift was made through the Paul and Katherine "Kay" Schmidt Trust. The funds will be used specifically for campus improvements; the Paul and Kay Schmidt Endowed Scholarship Fund to support students with interests in economics or business; and LU's endowment. "We are deeply grateful to Paul and Kay Schmidt for their loving and generous support of Lawrence University," college president Jill Beck said in a statement. The Schmidts graduated from LU in 1939. Their first date was attending LU's homecoming festivities in 1935. Paul Schmidt, a native of Park Ridge, Ill., earned a degree in economics at LU and spent most of his career with the Harold F. Pitman Co., a New Jersey-based printing business, where he served numerous positions including chairman and chief executive officer. He retired from the company in 1982. Paul Schmidt was 92 when he died in November 2009. Kay Schmidt was a Chicago native. She was 91 when she died in February 2009.
