    • Berenice had a doll with a tin head whom she named. While Punkin and Ral ph were confined to bed with a childhood illness, they set the do ll up on a perch and shot at its head with an air gun (B-B gun) causing qu ite a bit of damage. This obviously cause Berenice quite a bit of distres s. Punkin said the reason they shot at the doll's head was because they li ked the sound of the BB's hitting the tin.
Berenice named her fourth child, after that tin-headed doll that she lov ed very much...according to the stories that she later told Helen hersel f! Helen's brother Tom claims his mom named her "Helen Ann" because he sug gested it in a letter he wrote to her while she was in the hospital aft er delivering Helen.
Helen and Tom have a copy of that letter that he wrote.
Berenice use to tell Helen great stories about her family while they shar ed time together in the basement of the home at 319 Winnebago Ave in Menas ha. While Berenice ironed with the Mango Iron, Helen would sit in a cardbo ard box (while she pretended she was on great travels) and asked her Mom h undreds of questions....AND ask her to tell some stories over and over aga in. The best one was always about the Dog named Bob who belonged to Bereni ce's brother Ralph. Oh Bob, he was a GOOD DOG. (See Ralph Murray for t he real story)
Berenice also use to talk about her Mom, Mary Daly, who died when Bereni ce was just 13 years old. Berenice was the youngest of nine children and s he obviously loved her Mother dearly and had great emotions still about lo sing her at a young age. When her Mom became sick, the family sent Bereni ce to live for the summer with her Aunt Julia Murray on Diagonal St. in Ga lena (James Kelly home). Berenice always resented that she was not with h er mother during her last few months. Even worse, it was not until Bereni ce was 45 years old that she found out that her Mother had died from cance r. No one had ever told her! (Still, none of us know what kind of cancer t hat she died from.) Mary Daly was only 52 years old when she died.
Berenice did have good feelings about Julia tho...and took her daughter, H elen, and son, John, to see the house in Galena back in the 50's. She desc ribed it just the way Punkin did in his description to Tom Fink...with t he first level on one street and the third level on another street. (Hel en looked for the house in the late 90's but due to lack of time, was unab le to identify it yet.) Helen has a rocking chair from that home.
Berenice also told Helen that her Mom use to be a side saddle champion rid er. No one else ever heard the story so the rest of Helen's siblings thi nk she made that one up....but Helen know's that she did NOT make it up. B erenice told Helen that story when she gave her her own riding pants and r iding boots. Helen still has those items today...tho they have not fit h er since she was in 6th grade. ;-)
