  Biography	History of Seattle Washington
  Timothy Ryan who died February 10, 1916, was a prominent contract or of Seattle, an extensive business making heavy demands upon his time a nd energies. He was a native of County Limerick, Ireland and the son of M alachi and Judith Ryan, both of whom are now deceased. The father, who w as a farmer and contractor made a specialty of road building, died at t he age of 86 years, while his wife passed away at the age of 76. Timothy Ryan attended the National Schools of Ireland and in 1873 ca me to America, San Francisco. In the early period of his residence on th is continent he engaged in farming in California, and in 1884 he came to S eattle where he was afterward engaged in contracting. While in Californ ia he came in contact with his sister, Bridgit (Ryan) McNamara of Knigh ts Ferry, Stanislaus County, California and his brother Michael Ryan who w as superintendent of a mine in Sonora California. His patronage grew in volumne and importance and after the fire he bu ilt the New England Hotel, the Crane Company's building, the Hanbach build ing, the building of the Armour Packing Company, the boat shop at the na vy yard for the United States and other buildings at the navy yard. He d id considerable important road building and executed contracts for other p ublic improvements. He built the first brick highway in the state betwe en Tacoma and Kent, also paved Second Avenue from Pike Street to LYesler W ay, completing that work about a year ago, and paved Sixth and Eight Avenu es in the Westlake District. His contracts kept him extremely busy a nd he employed a large force of workmen. On February 27, 1889, in Seattle, Mr. Ryan and united in marriage wi th Miss Catherine Gleeson, a daughter of Michael Gleeson who was born in I reland and came to Seattle 27 years ago. To Mr. and Mrs. Ryan were born s even children, Josephine, the wife of J.W. Pettinger, who was a full partn er of Mr Ryan in the contracting business, Nora Catherine, Frances Margare t, and Alice Julia, all at home, and Josephine, James Timothy, and Thom as George, who are students. The religious faith of the family is that of the Catholic Church a nd Mr. Ryan held membership with the Knights of Columbus. He was also a m ember of the Woodman of the World, The Ancient Order of United Workman, a nd the Benevolent Order of Elks. His political faith was that of the Demo rcratic Party. He served as councilman in 1893-94, was superintende nt of streets in 1894, and was county commissioner in 1897, serving f or a two year term. He did very important work in the reconstruction of t he city following the fire of 1889 and through that period was associat ed with Matt Brannigan in his extensive building operations. He continu ed as a leading contractor of the city until his death, enjoying a busine ss of large and gratifying proportions. FROM THE HISTORY OF SEATTLE WASHINGTON
