  Family History Researcher	Bertha was a strong believer in Christ and remained active in her churc h, St. John's Lutheran Church at 48th and Nicollet in Minneapolis, Minneso ta until shortly before her death, continuing to participate in the women 's circle and attending services. I remember my grandmother coming to our house for my mother to give her ha ir a permanent. Grandma was 64 when I was born, so I only remember h er as an "old lady". I remember going on the bus with her to see the mov ie "Sound of Music" when it came out in 1965, back in the days when a mov ie theatre had one large screen and only showed one movie, and there w as a balcony where the smokers could sit. She had been widowed many yea rs before I was born, and I would go and spend the night with her on ce in a while. Bertha taught me how to play cards, and how to do jigsaw p uzzles. She kept up with politics and world events until the time of her d eath. She was planning a trip to see her son Jack, and had been having a f ew medical problems so her surviving daughters, Betty and Dorothy convinc ed her that she needed to see a doctor before she left. The doctor end ed up putting Bertha in the hospital due to heart and lung problems. Bert ha's mother died of tuberculosis, and she may never have had strong lun gs due to exposure to her mom, although she was very healthy through her l ife. It ended up that she never got to take her trip, and died at the ho me of her daughter Dorothy whom she had gone to stay with after her relea se from the hospital. Although not demonstrative, she managed to let h er grandchildren know she loved them. She had lived on a limited income f or many years, having gone to work after her husband died when she w as in her early 50's. She always had thoughtful, appropriate gifts for Ch ristmas and birthdays, but more importantly was willing to spend time indi vidually with her grandchildren. Bertha was not a woman interested in coo king or sewing, those sorts of domestic interests. She loved baseball, a nd listened to the games on the radio.
