  Josephine J. Verbeten, Little Chute, age 101, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 28, 2010, at St. Paul Elder Services, Kaukauna. She was born in Combined Locks on April 23, 1909, to the late John J. and Antonette "Nettie" (Van Domelen) Van Handel. She was a resident of Little Chute since 1916. On December 9, 1988, Josephine was united in marriage to Howard Verbeten and who preceded her in death on September 7, 1995. On November 24, 1955, she married Adolph "Tobey" Toben and he preceded her in death on December 7, 1957. Josephine married Roman Haupt on August 11, 1936, and he preceded her in death on December 8, 1939. Josephine had been a student at the University of Wisconsin and Stout Institute, where she taught a summer session. As an Adult Education Instructor, she taught at Combined Locks grade school, Appleton, Menasha and Kaukauna Vocational Schools. For 26 years, as a State Circuit Instructor, she traveled to Marshfield, Nekoosa, Wisconsin Rapids and Stevens Point; teaching tailoring, millinery, drapery, slip covering and advance clothing. Retiring from traveling, she taught at St. John's School in the home economics department, and evening classes at Little Chute for the Appleton Vocational School. She also catered for friends. Josephine loved to cook, play bridge, sheepshead and cribbage. She was a charter member of Fox Valley Golf Course, and was playing golf until the age of 91 years old. She was also a member of Little Chute Seniors, Kaukauna AARP, K.C. Ladies of Little Chute, Jacob Coppus American Legion Auxilliary, where she served as past chaplain. She was also a 54 year member of Kaukauna Elks Ladies, past president of Appleton Homemakers, and belonged to several bridge and sheepshead groups. Josephine is survived by her sister, Ruth Hartjes; a sister-in-law, Martha (Joseph) Haupt; special nieces, Jane Vanden Heuvel, Claire Jansen and Lynn Landers. She is further survived by a stepdaughter, Pat (Roger) Bowers; stepson, Dan (Marge) Verbeten; stepdaughter-in-law, Leta Verbeten; stepson-in-law, Gary Young; a special stepgranddaughter, Diane (James) Beahm; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends; wonderful neighbors, Delores (Gordy) Diedrick and Joan Casey. Josephine was preceded in death by three brothers and sisters-in-law: Willard "Preacher" (Mildred), Julius "Larry" (Adele "Babe") and Clarence "Dutch" (Louise) Van Handel; six sisters: Harriet (John) Busch, Della (Elmer) Grimm, Helen (Lewis) McCormick, Edith Weyenberg, infants Cora and Jane Van Handel; a stepson, Jim Verbeten and stepdaughter, Judy Young. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 30, 2010, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, 323 S. Pine St., Little Chute with Fr. Raphael Chiaka officiating. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, Little Chute. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Saturday at the church until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
