Sister Jean M. Derus, 72, a nun who spent the last 20 years serving her Sinsinawa (Wis.) Dominican Order in the Englewood area, died Monday at Mercy Hospital. For many years, she was her community's business officer, a post she held until her death. She earlier served as provincial councillor. Sister Derus previously was acting administrator of the former Our Lady of Solace Church. She also was treasurer of Visitation High and business officer of Unity Catholic High, two defunct South Side schools. Known for her feminist views and advocacy of social justice, she edited Exchange magazine, a publication dealing with changes in religious communities, during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Sister Derus was born in Kaukauna, Wis. She graduated from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis., then received a master's in economics from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She worked for the federal government's Bureau of the Budget before joining the order in 1949. Sister Derus was a high school teacher before being sent to Rosary College in River Forest, where she taught economics and was admissions director. Survivors include two sisters, Nathalie Kehoe and Lorena Hooyman, and four brothers, Leonard, Robert, Gerald and David. Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Rosary Chapel, Sinsinawa, Wis. Burial will be in Sinsinawa.
