The listing of burials at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church Cemetery is most certainly not a complete
list of all the burials that have taken place there. Many of the older graves that may have been originally marked
with an engraved wooden cross have deteriorated with age and many of the ground stones have been
covered with vegetation. The earliest burials would have taken place near the original church building (1836-1871)
which was located at the corner of Canal and Pine Streets. In 1858 a civil enactment required that the cemetery
be situated outside the city. On May 24, 1858, three acres of land were purchased and that became what is now
referred to as the "Old" section. The oldest known tombstone is that of Patrick Cantwell who died on March 28, 1858.
In 1916, an additional eleven acres was purchased and the first burial in the
"New" section was that of Simon Wynboom who died on August 27, 1917.
The official church records as listed in the 1936 St. John Centennial Book (page 56) list 302
deaths from 1836-1857. Many of those may have been recorded in the St. John Church register, but were actually
death sacraments that occurred at a "mission" church that was being attended to by the priest based at St. John's.
