  Biography Cecelia Margaret used Celia as her common name, though her grandchildren called her Nana. Celia was born and raised in a rock house built by her father 2 miles from Mineral Point, WI; there she helped with the dairy farming. She spoke only German until she went to school. She was the daughter who always cared for sick family members. She was quarantined with her sister Laura in the attic when Laura had scarlet fever. Celia lived at home taking care of her parents till her marriage. She met Patrick at a family gathering for her niece, Elizabeth Remfrey and his brother, Frank. Before her marriage she worked at Gundry & Gray, a very large and elegant department store, in Mineral Point. She was an excellent seamstress having gone to school for tailoring in Chicago about 1910. When she returned to Mineral Point, she did dressmaking and tailoring. She had apprentices working under her. In 1921, she and Patrick were living in Darlington, WI. A very good cook, she made pie 5 days a week. There were lots of canned, homemade fruit sauces - peaches, strawberries and apple. She made wonderful bread, and she also made all the family clothes. She never worked a job after she was married - only single women worked outside the home. Patrick and Celia were not coffee drinkers; but social visitors were served wine. Prohibition lasted until 1935, but Celia made wine in the spring and beer in the summer. After the loss of the farms and Patrick's death, he left a $5000 insurance policy, Celia again did seamstress work. She was never idle, even when sitting she did needlework. She was a perfectionist and her needlework was exquisite. She always looked nice and was particular about her dress, hat, and gloves. She was stern but had a great sense of humor, and had no fear of laughing at herself. She loved doing jigsaw puzzles. Once, when she and her daughter-in-law, Mae, were window shopping, Mae saw a suit she liked on a mannequin. Celia drew a sketch, they went to a fabric store and got material and in a couple of days made the suit. It fit to perfection. She was never idle, even when sitting she did needlework. She was a perfectionist and her needle work was exquisite. She always looked nice and was particular about her dress, hat, and gloves. Celia met Patrick McQuaid at a family gathering for her niece, Elizabeth Remfrey. Celia and Patrick were married 28 Oct 1914, despite the disapproval of her father. At the time she was living at home taking care of her parents, plus Patrick was Irish. Her father did not want her to get married, especially to an Irishman. After her marriage, another daughter took care of their parents. Once at a family gathering, one of Celia's children asked who the old man in the sweater was, the answer was a terse 'My father'; end of conversation. Celia had a great sense of humor, and had no fear of laughing at herself. She was a strict disciplinarian; kept meticulous house, and loved doing jig saw puzzles. She had snow white hair all the time any of her adult descendants knew her. She was 5'7", sturdily built, had brown eyes. She had high blood pressure and would get very dizzy and collapse because of it, thus she avoided using salt; but when she reached her mid 80s declared that she was going to use salt again. She had lived a long life and wasn't going to let using it worry her. She lived her entire married life in Darlington, WI. After breaking her hip in 1962, she went to live with her son in Chatsworth, CA.
