LUCIE Section: LOCAL Page: 4B Index Terms: DEATH AGE AREA Obituary Deceased Name: FORMER STATE LEGISLATOR JOHN MOORE MCCARTY, 79 John Moore McCarty, a state senator in the 1960s and a circuit judge befo re that, has died. He was 79, and died Friday, two weeks after he had a stroke. Mr. McCarty was elected to the Florida Senate in 1962 and again in 1966. H is brother was the late Gov. Dan McCarty, who was in office only a mon th in 1953 before he had a disabling heart attack. The brothers' grandparents were among the first pioneers to settle in Fo rt Pierce, moving to the area in 1882 as pineapple farmers and cattle ranc hers. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Mr. McCarty return ed to Fort Pierce to resume his private law practice. He served as a municipal judge and circuit judge in the former 9th Judici al Circuit before being elected to the state senate. Peggy Monahan, Mr. McCarty's daughter, said her father loved the outdoo rs and was friendly to anyone he met. ''He never knew a stranger,'' Monahan said. ''He was always looking to bef riend a new person.'' Mr. McCarty had citrus groves and a cattle ranch near Fort Pierce, a nd he was a president of the former Fort Pierce Memorial Hospital. Mr. McC arty also served as secretary of the board of directors of the former Po rt St. Lucie Bank, now Barnett Bank of St. Lucie County, and director emer itus for the board of Florida Power & Light Co. He is survived by two sons, a daughter and seven grandchildren. _________________

  JOHN M. MCCARTY FORMER STATE SENATOR, MAJOR UF BOOSTER John M. McCarty, former state senator, Florida Bar president and promine nt booster of the University of Florida, has died of complications fr om a stroke. He was 79. Born in Fort Pierce, McCarty earned his undergraduate and law degrees fr om UF, where he played varsity football and basketball and served as stude nt body president. He became a board member of the University of Florida F oundation, a member of the UF President's Council and a Gator booster. After graduating from law school in 1941, McCarty went into private practi ce. He served as a municipal and circuit judge before being elected to t he Florida Senate in 1962. He was re- elected in 1966. He served as Flori da Bar president in 1971 and 1972. McCarty's business interests included citrus groves and a cattle ranch ne ar Fort Pierce. He also served for years as an Orange Bowl state directo r. He was a vestryman and Sunday school superintendent at St. Andrews Epis copal Church in Fort Pierce. McCarty's brother Dan McCarty was elected Florida's governor in 1952; he d ied in office less than one year into his term. John McCarty is survived by his two sons, John M. McCarty Jr. of Fort Pier ce and Thomas C. McCarty of Greensboro, N.C.; daughter Margaret "Peggy" Mo nahan of Fort Pierce; and seven grandchildren.
