  Michael Brautigan, Kaukauna sailor, who won the bronze star for gallantry in action in Vietnam, telephoned home Friday to say he will leave Japan for the states today. He will spend one week in San Diego then be transferred to the naval hospital at Great Lakes for convalescence from wounds received October 21. The Brautigan's have been busy answering the phone and receiving mail since her son became a military hero. "We received letters from all over the state" Mrs. Brautigan said. "Nice letters from people who just wanted to say something good to us." She said a clipping from the Janesville newspaper called her son "The Sgt. York of Vietnam." This Thursday will be Mike's 18th birthday.

  Michael Brautigan, Kaukauna sailor who received nationwide fame last fall for heroism in Vietnam, has returned home after receiving a medical discharge from service. The 18- year-old Navy man received multiple fractures and lacerations when enemy fire struck the small boat in which he was making a landing. Brautigan was given the bronze star for heroism in action in October previous to his being wounded. He was released from the Philadelphia Naval hospital, where he had been convalescing since December. Brautigan also received the U.S. Navy commendation medal for bravery during a 14-hour fire on board the USS Piermont on which he was stationed.

  Michael F. "Mike" Brautigan, 61, Little Chute, passed away at Appleton Medical Center on Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, from a serious illness. He was born in Appleton on Dec. 2, 1947, the son of George and Mary (Vondracek) Brautigan. Mike was proud to serve in the United States Navy during the Vietnam era. On Nov. 20, 1983, he married his wife of 26 years, Wendy Livingston, in Las Vegas. Mike had a lot of good one-liners and a good sense of humor. Mike enjoyed traveling with his wife to Las Vegas. He is survived by his wife, Wendy; his mother, brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Biese; and his father. The family extends a special thank you to the staff at Appleton Medical Center for their compassionate care.
