- Florence Katherine Benzschwel, 80, Hilbert, died on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at her home. She was born on June 12, 1928, in Armstrong Creek, daughter of the late Augusta Fuhrman. She married Robert Benzschwel on June 15, 1948, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Greenleaf. Florence worked as a welder in the shipyards in Sturgeon Bay and was a waitress for Rudy Seljan and Ralph Orth. She also farmed with her husband for 35 years in the Town of Rantoul and did volunteer work for the Salvatorian Center in New Holstein for 22 years. She was a member of St. Mary Parish in Hilbert, the Christian Mothers and the St. John Mission Society.
Florence loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. You could count on Florence to call on your birthday to play Happy Birthday on her harmonica. She loved the annual shopping trip with her girls and never stopped experiencing new things. She got her second wind at age 80 and had her first motorcycle ride, got her ears pierced and learned e-mail.
Survivors include the love of her life, Robert "Babe" Benzschwel, Hilbert; her children, Kathie (Nick) Kesler, Hilbert; Carol (Jerome) Popp, Brillion; Robert, Jr. (Penny) Benzschwel, Chilton; Pat (Kerry) Kuehl, Brillion; Jean (Tom) Roehrig, Hilbert; Joan (Steve) Texmunt, Potter; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; her sisters and brothers, Ann Sprangers, New Holstein; Shirley Johnson, Florida; Carol (Bill) Cleveland, Woodruff; Paul (Lil) Fuhrman, Eddie (Jan) Fuhrman and Dick Fuhrman, all of Hazelhurst; Pat (Brenda) Fuhrman, West Bend; and many other relatives and friends.
Florence was preceded in death by her mother, Augusta Fuhrman; great-grandmother, Kate Lukaszewski; a sister, Bonnie Haugen; and a granddaughter, Emileen Popp.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Hilbert. The Rev. Phillip Dihn Van Thiep will officiate, with cremation to follow. Friends may call at the Wieting Funeral Home in Brillion on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. with a parish pray service to be held at 7:30 p.m. There will be no visitation on Wednesday before Mass.
