  Charles E. "Chuck" Engels, 78, De Pere passed away Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, at Aurora Baycare Hospital. Chuck was born Nov. 16, 1929, in Green Bay, the son of the late Florence Engels and Clarence Becker and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He married Charlotte Heenan on June 16, 1956. She preceded him in death on Nov. 29, 2006. Chuck worked over 40 years as a chef and realized his dream of running his own restaurant as Chuck and Char owned and managed several supper clubs. He also cooked at many local establishments such as the Stratosphere, Howard Johnson's, Walnut Cafe and The Spot. After retirement, Chuck stayed active by delivering pizzas for Happy Joe's. Chuck was an avid Packers fan and was so proud of the fact that his uncle, #32 Wayland Becker, played opposite of Don Hutson for the Packers. He enjoyed fishing and was a singer, songwriter and guitar player. Chuck and Char loved their nature walks and were especially proud of the memorial bench at Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve which was placed in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary. He also enjoyed coin and stamp collecting, finding four-leaf clovers and was a member of the Green Bay Barber Shoppers. Survivors include his children, Charles Jr. (Criss) Engels, Georgia; Bruce (Christi) Engels, Green Bay; Linda (Tom) Steber, Green Bay; and Jeannine (Hans) Liebert, New York; grandchildren, Brandon, Heather, Brittany and Josh Engels, Kaitlyn Engels and Lorelei (J.P.) Savaryn and Kyle Wondrash. Besides his wife and parents, Chuck was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Goracke, a Hollywood stunt woman. Friends may call at the Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 E. Mason St. on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of services. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Fr. Mike Steber officiating.
