  A fatal accident occurred on the farm of Herman Kubitz in the town of Bear Creek. Herman Borchardt and two other men were drilling a well for Mr. Kubitz when he found it necessary to use dynamite. Borchardt had about a pound of the explosive between his knees as he inserted the cap it exploded, and he was blown to bits. One man nearby lost an eye and had his leg badly opened. Welcome Independent - "Just as we were going to press word was received that Herman Borchardt was killed out right by an explosion of dynamite while drilling a well near Symco."
