- Sister Jane Hermus, 86, died Feb. 11, 2014, at Franciscan Woods in Brookfield, Wis. She was born in Little Chute, on April 1, 1927, one of six children. Sister Jane entered the Wheaton Franciscan order in 1946 and professed perpetual vows in 1949. Sr. Jane is preceded in death by her parents, Johanna and Rudolph Hermus, Sr., her sisters, Margaret Verhagen and Jane Van Hout, her brothers, Cornelius Hermus, John Hermus, and Rudolph Hermus, Jr., brother-in-law, Joseph Van Hout, as well as a special aunt, Sister Mary Bernita, OSF.
She is survived her by sisters-in-law, Virginia "Jeanie" (Rudolph, Jr.) Hermus, Anne "Betty" (Cornelius) Hermus, Alice "Honey" (John) Hermus, and brother-in-law, Dave (Rosemary) Verhagen, as well as a multitude of nieces, nephews and their families.
After completing a Bachelor's degree in Dietetics and Science, Sr. Jane was missioned as a Dietitian and Director of the Dietary Department at St. Mary's Hospital, Racine from 1953 to 1961, St. Anthony's Hospital, St. Louis, MO from 1961 to 1964, again at St. Mary's Hospital in Racine from 1964 to 1968, and St. Francis Hospital, Waterloo, IA from 1968 until her resignation in 1995. In 1987, she assumed the additional role of Senior Nutritionist, and held this position until 1997, two years beyond her resignation as a Dietitian and Director of Dietary Management. In both Racine and Waterloo, she also served the Sisters as local directress.
In 1997, Sr. Jane returned to the Motherhouse in Wheaton, IL where she was local directress of the Sisters for a year. In 1998, she began her well-earned retirement, remaining in the Motherhouse community. In February of 2010, she was transferred to Franciscan Woods in Brookfield, WI.
In regard to how she would like to be remembered, Sister Jane once wrote, "I would like to be remembered as a person who tried to show her love and appreciation for her religious roots by the love and concern she showed for her senior sisters."
Prayer and wake services were held at Our Lady of Angels Convent Chapel, on the Wheaton Franciscan Campus in Wheaton, IL. A Mass of Christian burial will be take place today, Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at 10 a.m. also at the convent chapel, 26W171 Roosevelt Road, Wheaton, IL, 60187. Internment will be in Assumption Cemetery, 1S510 Winfield Road, Wheaton, IL 60189.
