Gertrude Bubolz-Brummund, Appleton, 99, passed away on Friday, Oct. 26, 2007, at her son's residence in Elm Grove. She was born on her family's farm in Cicero, Wis., on Feb. 24, 1908, to the late Julius and Emilie (Jeske) Bubolz. On Oct. 4, 1936, she was united in marriage to the late Attorney Walter H. Brummund. Gertrude loved learning and was talented in many areas. While young, she played the piano in the family orchestra and worked for Home Mutual Insurance Company (Secura), which was founded by her father. An excellent student, she attended high school in Rhinelander and Madison where she graduated first in her class from the University High School. She received her bachelor's degree in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin. She lived in Midland, Texas, during World War II where her husband served in the Air Force as Judge Advocate General.
Gertrude lived a life of community service. She served in leadership positions from the local to international level. Among these organizations were Goodwill Industries, YMCA, Visiting Nurses Association, AAUW, Girl Scouting, Appleton Jaycettes, Fiction Club and the Appleton Altrusa Club. She was also active in the St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church as a member of the choir and Ladies Aid and was a member of the North Shore Singers at the North Shore Golf Club. Always supportive and sharing the interest of her husband in the legal profession, Gertrude helped start the local chapter of the Lawyers' Wives of Wisconsin (American Lawyers Auxiliary) for which she served as president at the local, state and national levels. With her husband, she was active in the World Peace Through Law organization (now World Jurist Association). She served as President of the Center Associates of this organization. She traveled extensively and shared her experiences as an entertaining speaker. She loved people, lived with an encouraging, positive attitude and is remembered for her infectious smile.
Gertrude will be sadly missed by her son, Dr. Walter (Dr. Sara Arnold) Brummund of Elm Grove, and their children, Walter III, Dieter and Esther; son, Paul (Nancy) Brummund of Watertown and their children, Matthew (Jennifer), Karl (Pamela), Peter (Karen) and Christine; daughter, Ann (Ronald) Kirk of Kennesaw, Ga., and their children, Angeli and John; seven great-grandchildren, Seth, Claire, Emma, Margaret, Kathryn, Isaak and Nathan; and sister, Ethel Jesse, of Appleton, Wis.
