    David J. Petrie, age 75, of Sherwood, died on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at his home after a short but courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 9, 1933, in Stockbridge, son of the late Bernard and Dorothy (Schumacher) Petrie. He married Joan Goeser on December 30, 1953, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Jericho. David enlisted in the United States Army and served his country from 1952-1955 in Japan during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge from the military, he worked for 35 years for WE Energies.
    David was a very involved member of the Sherwood Lions Club for 30 years. He served as president from 1984-85, regional chairman and 27-B1 district governor from 1995-96, was a diamond recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, received the International President certificate of appreciation in 2003-04, received the Birch-Strum Award, sold thousands of roses for the Lions Club fundraiser, started a Leo Club at Sacred Heart School in Sherwood and helped the club win the Platinum award by chairing the local blood drive. Over the years Dave gave nearly 8 gallons of blood himself. David also served on the village board for 3 years, he was selected as the Sherwood Citizen of the Year by the Jaycees, he was a very active member in 4-H; first as a member and then as a leader, and he served on the Calumet County Fair Board for 15 years. He was also a member of SJSH Parish and served as lector, maintenance engineer, and on various committees.
    Dave was very active with horses and was the center of attention in the neighborhood as his beautiful horses could be seen in the pasture. He could always be seen out in the yard in his overalls with his handy dog next to him. He was on the WI State Horse Council for many years and served as president for several terms. He was awarded the American Horse Council, Marjorie VanNess award and was awarded the Horse Person of the year in 1987. He was instrumental in getting horse trails in High Cliff State Park, was a charter member of High Cliff Ridge Riders and Calumet County Horse Promoters, was board of director for The Midwest Horse Fair and served as President for many years, and a member of the Calumet County Riders Club.
    Survivors include his wife, Joan; children and grandchildren: Linda (Dave) Olson and children, Aaron and Kyle of Shawano, WI; Joe (Jan) Petrie and children, Maxwell and Samantha of Plano, TX; Jean (Mark) Landreman and daughter Tammi (Mark) Bartels and great-grandchildren, Taylor and Carter, and daughter Laurie and fiance Dan Heistad, all of Kaukauna, WI; John (Jenny) Petrie and children, Chad, Erica, Jacob, and Jordan of Chilton; Ted (Brigitte) Petrie and children, George, Jedediah, Silas, Cecilia of Brillion; and Dan (Leslie) Petrie and children, Anna and Robert of Franklin, VA; brothers and sisters: Frank (Ann) Petrie of Fremont, CA; Jim (Ginny) Petrie of New Holstein; and Lucy Schwarz of Green Lake, WI; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law: Bill (Karen) Goeser of Moran, WY; and Bonnie Goeser of Bollingbrook, IL; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Dorothy (Schumacher) Petrie; mother and father-in-law, Joe (Sam) and Frieda Goeser; a son, Robert Petrie; sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and Hugh Goggins; and brother-in-law, Eugene Schwarz.
    Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 24, 2008, at St. John Sacred Heart Church in Sherwood with Rev. Philip Dinh-Van-Thiep officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Sherwood. Friends may call at Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W Main St., Chilton) from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, November 23, 2008, and on Monday at St. John Sacred Heart Church from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. when the service will be held.
