    Lewis F. Nelson, Kaukauna mayor for seven years in the 1930's and 40's, died at 11 a.m. Monday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he had a winter home. He was 83 years of age. He had been in the hospital with a heart condition for about a week. In addition to serving as mayor Nelson was involved in numerous other civic activities and was general manager of the Badger Tissue Mills for 38 years, and president of the corporation for most of that time. The funeral will be held in Kaukauna, but arrangements are not yet complete.

    Lewis married Phillips, Klara Matilda Bef 1919.     JANE NELSON BER passed away October 8, 2007, at the age of 87, in Tomball, Texas. She was born in Kaukauna, Wisconsin on January 2, 1920, to Lewis and Clare Nelson. After completing high school she received her degree from the University of Wisconsin in Art Education. Her working years were teaching first and fifth grade, in schools from Wisconsin to Guam. She and Richard Ber married on January 10, 1942 and enjoyed 59 years together until his passing in 2001. They lived and traveled the world and set up housekeeping 47 times in the course of their married life. They were accomplished and experienced travelers who also enjoyed snow skiing and golf. In her younger years she was a skilled seamstress and an accomplished artist.
    Throughout her life she was a voracious reader who treasured her magazines and books until her death. The family wishes to thank the staff of The Heritage Retirement Community in Tomball for their compassionate care over the last 3 plus years that she lived there. A memorial service will be held at Christ the Good Shepherd Catholic Community in Spring on Tuesday October 16 at 10:00AM. In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to the charity of your choice.

    David L. Nelson passed away peacefully July 18, 2017 surrounded by his family. He was born July 5, 1921 in Kaukauna, WI to Lewis F. and Clara (Philipps) Nelson. He attended parochial and public school in Kaukauna and graduated from Marquette University College of Business Administration in 1943. In 1951, he was admitted to practice as a Certified Public Accountant by the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
    On September 6, 1943, while in service in California, he married Rita E. Randall of Milwaukee, WI.
    During WWII he served in Europe with the 103rd Infantry Division.
    Following his three year service in the US Army during WWII, he spent three and one half years in the marketing department of the Western Condensing Company in Appleton, WI. During the years of 1950-1953 he served as a US Internal Revenue Agent in Green Bay.
    During the years 1953 to 1962 he was employed by both the Green Bay Newspaper Company of Green Bay, WI and Post Corporation of Appleton, WI, where he served as Chief Financial Officer and as a director of both corporations. During this period the Green Bay Newspaper Company and Post Corporation were corporations controlled by the same owners.
    In 1962, these corporations separated their ownership and David then devoted his interests solely to Post Corporation. There he served as a director and Chief Operating and Chief Financial Officer until 1984 when the corporation was sold. At the time of the sale Mr. Nelson was Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of that firm.
    In 1984 David purchased radio stations in Eau Claire, WI and subsequently purchased radio stations in Kirksville, MO, Marshalltown, IA, and Fargo, ND. He also acquired ownership in Holiday Travel Service of Eau Claire and Winnebago Color Press in Menasha, WI. He served as an officer and director of these firms until his death.
    David had a lifelong passion for lighthouses and was instrumental in the restoration of the Grassy Island Range Lights.
    David was an avid supporter of the historical preservation of the Fox River Valley and generously donated to many organizations.
    David is survived by his sons Thomas (Sandra) of Mentor, OH and Richard (Paula) of Grand Rapids, MI. and four grandchildren: Dustin, Marissa, Sylvia, and Dawn. He is also survived by his brother Hugh (Jean).
    David was preceded in death by his wife Rita on February 16, 2017; son John; and sisters Peggy, Jane, Louise, and Sally.
    David was a long time member of the Green Bay Yacht Club and a founding member of the OSG.
    Family and friends are invited to come visit, share memories, and toast to a life well lived on Friday, July 21, 2017 at the Green Bay Yacht Club, 100 Bay Beach Rd, Green Bay, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

    Menasha - Hugh Francis Nelson, age 91, Appleton Attorney and Calumet County Circuit Court Judge, died on August 11, 2018, a resident of the Village of Harrison, Calumet County, Wisconsin.
    Hugh was the fifth of six children born to Lewis F. Nelson and Clara (Philipps) Nelson of Kaukauna. His sisters Peggy (Peter, Jr.) Metz, Jane (Richard) Ber, Louise (Gilbert) Anderson and Sally (Ever) Hammes and older brother, David L. (Rita) Nelson all preceded him in death, the latter at age 96 in 2017.
    Hugh was raised in Kaukauna where he attended St. Mary School. As a youth he was active as a Boy Scout earning 30 merit badges including all necessary for Eagle Scout status. A very good swimmer, he was employed by the city of Kaukauna as life guard at its Fox River swimming facility while he was in high school. A frequent Honor Roll student at Kaukauna High School, he was a member of the track team and All Conference Center on the 1944 football squad.
    Upon graduating high school, he enlisted in the US Navy and was sent to Westminster College, Fulton MO as part of the Navy's V-5 program for navy pilots. At the war's end in the Pacific, he was sent to Guam in the Marianas Islands. After his honorable discharge, he attended St. Norbert College in De Pere, WI, the University of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin Law School at Madison. He practiced law in Appleton from 1953 to 1979 and was a member of the Wisconsin, American, Outagamie County and Calumet County Bar Associations, the Outagamie Bar Association Grievance Committee and was president of the Outagamie Bar Association in 1972-73. He served as director of the High Cliff Forest Park Association, as chairman of the Waverly Sanitary District and as Vice Chairman of the State Bar Professional Responsibility Committee District 10 prior to his election as judge.
    Hugh was elected Calumet County Circuit Judge and served from 1980 to 1992. He was Deputy Chief Judge 4th Judicial District from 1986 to 1989 and Chief Judge 4th Judicial District from 1990 to 1992. After his retirement from the bench, he was a Reserve Judge and Mediation and Arbitration Practitioner for 10 years.
    Hugh and Jean Ginnow of Appleton were married on September 29, 1956 and would have celebrated 62 years of marriage in September. They have two daughters, Linda (Ralph) De Marco of the Village of Harrison, WI and Nan (Harold) Cramer of Bellaire, TX. Three granddaughters; Kaylin De Marco (Matt) Schueler, Lauren De Marco (Zac) Chilson, Michelle De Marco and great granddaughter, Callie Chilson.
    Hugh and Jean traveled extensively to all but three of the US states, Europe, Africa, Asia, South America and Canada. Hugh was an avid reader, historian and enjoyed caring for his long-time Lake Winnebago lakeshore property.
    A heartfelt thank you is extended to all his caregivers at ThedaCare Appleton Medical Center, St. Paul Home Hospice and ThedaCare at Home (Lisa).
    A private memorial is planned at a later date for family and friends.
