Biography:
HOTEL LASALLE. One of the leading hostelries of Kaukauna, and one that is much patronized by the traveling public, is this well known house, the proprietor of which, Michael H. Niesen, is one of that city's most popular citizens. The Hotel LaSalle was built in 1905, by Captain D. J. Brothers, one of the first white men to come to Kaukauna, and was erected by him to perpetuate his memory in the minds of those who came after. This famous stand has changed hands a number of times, and on April 1, 1910, Mr. Niesen took charge of its affairs. It is of solid brick construction, has thirty-eight rooms, and its ample dining room seats 100 guests. Michael H. Niesen was born October 1, 1878, in Ozaukee county, Wisconsin, son of Hubert and Catherine (Wolf) Niesen, natives of Wisconsin. Mr. Niesen's father moved to Kaukauna June 23, 1881, and has followed the trade of millwright here ever since, having helped to build mills on the Fox River during the past thirty years, as well as on the Wisconsin River. He is well known in this business and enjoys an enviable reputation for integrity and probity. Mr. Niesen and his wife were members of the Catholic Church and were the parents of seven children, all of whom survive. Michael H. Niesen received his education in the schools of Kaukauna, after leaving which he was for some time engaged in railroad work. He then entered the retail liquor business, and in 1910 became proprietor of the Hotel LaSalle, which he has brought up to a high standard of excellence. Mr. Niesen was married June 9, 1908, to Ida Ortleib, of Chilton, Wisconsin. They are members of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He is a member of the Foresters, of which he has been district secretary since its organization, and he also holds membership in the Fraternal Order of Eagles, acting in the capacity of treasurer of that order, a position he has held since the lodge was started in Kaukauna. Mr. Niesen is very public-spirited, and he has found time from his business interests to serve his city as alderman and as a member of the fire and police commission, and he now holds the latter office.

December 21, 1938n - Robert J. Niesen, 41, 210 Kaukauna St., died at St. Elizabeth hospital Monday evening the result of injuries received when he was hit by car. Niesen had purchased the Christmas tree at the Fred Mueller farm on old Highway 41. When he had driven about 100 feet along the highway after leaving the farm he discovered at the tree had fallen off his car. He drove into a driveway and went back for the tree when he was hit by a car. He was rushed to the hospital immediately by ambulance where he died.

Description: Boy, 5, Drowns In Fox River At Kaukauna Kaukauna - The Fox River claimed its first 1924 victim shortly after 3 o'clock Friday afternoon when Jack Niesen, 5 year old son of Mr and Mrs John Niesen, was drowned in the river back of the Niesen home, 411 Wisconsin ave. Young Niesen with a group of other children was playing on the bank of the river pushing ice cakes into the stream. The cries of his play mates attracted the attention of Edward "Patty" Pahl, owner of a boathouse in that vicinity, who quickly pulled the child from the water and rushed into the Niesen home. Attempts of doctors to revive him proved futile. The child is survived by his parents and four brothers, Henry, Herbert, Clarence and Robert.

Joseph Henry Niesen, age 79, of Kaukauna, passed away Saturday evening, April 18, 2009, at Appleton Healthcare Center. Joseph was born on November 8, 1929, in Appleton, to John and Marie (Schubert) Niesen. Joseph was united in marriage to Mary J. Miller. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching the Packers and the Brewers. Joseph was very hardworking and generous; he worked at Thilmany for 42 years until retirement.
Joseph loved to travel with his wife, Mary. He will be remembered for all of the wonderful stories he told and the laughter that filled a room by his jokes.
In addition to his wife, Mary, Joseph is survived by his three sons: Paul, Tim (Gerda), and Brad Niesen; his niece, Janna (Dale) Davis; and other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Vera; a son, Greg; and first wife Vernis.
A Funeral Liturgy for Joseph will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 23, 2009, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna. Fr. Marty Fox will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 12 noon until the time of service. Burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery.

NIESEN, KENNETH R. "KEN" Kenneth R. Niesen, age 84, of Kaukauna, passed away on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 with his family at his side. He was born on July 8, 1927 in Appleton, the son of the late Robert and Pearl (Ehnerd) Niesen. Ken served his country in the U.S. Army. On September 26, 1953 he married Pauline Huisman at St. John Catholic Church in Little Chute. Ken was a life-long member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1033 and Kaukauna Electric City VFW Post 3319 and volunteered at Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in Kaukauna. Kenneth R. Niesen, age 84, of Kaukauna, passed away on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 with his family at his side. He was born on July 8, 1927 in Appleton, the son of the late Robert and Pearl (Ehnerd) Niesen. Ken served his country in the U.S. Army. On September 26, 1953 he married Pauline Huisman at St. John Catholic Church in Little Chute. Ken was a life-long member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1033 and Kaukauna Electric City VFW Post 3319 and volunteered at Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, Kaukauna. Richard Niesen, age 87 of Cottage Grove, WI, formerly of Kaukauna, passed away on Monday morning, December 4, 2017. Dick was born in Kaukauna on November 11, 1930, son of the late Robert and Pearl (Ehnerd) Niesen, and was a graduate of the Kaukauna High School, class of 1949. After attending St. Norbert College in DePere, Dick served his country in the United States Army in Korea, attaining the rank of 1ST Lieutenant. On April 7, 1958 Dick married Theresa Huisman; she preceded him in death on August 13, 2004.
Dick loved both new and old automobiles and spent over 30 years employed by General Motors. He found rare automobiles in storage, rebuilt, polished, and drove them only to sell them and move on to the next . Driving is a true passion he has passed on to his next generations. If it produced horse power Dick loved to drive it. After many years, Dick broke tradition and traded a car for a clock collection. He also traded a collector car for an antique gun collection filling the lower level of the house with wall to wall antique guns. With all of the cars, clocks, and antique guns, Dick found a need for more space in their home. Without hesitation, he sketched a home remodeling plan freehand, brought in a concrete provider, and completely changed the back of the home adding more garage space. At the same time he provided Theresa with the screened-in porch she always desired. They worked hard together to establish positive faith-filled relationships with their children and insisted on a strong work ethic.
Dick is survived by five children: Alan (Cindy) Schabow of Papillion, Nebraska, Jean (Tom) Zornow of Kaukauna, Don (Erin) Niesen of Waunakee, Ron Niesen of Monona, and Scott (Bev) Niesen of Cambridge. There are also twelve grandchildren: Robert (Lisa) Zornow, Michelle (Daryl Hurst) Zornow, Allison (Mike) Newburn, Cherie (Jeff) Hughes, Nathalie Niesen, Mackenzie Satern, Tyler (Dani Jackson) Niesen, Travis Niesen, Joshua Niesen, Kaitlin Satern, Elizabeth Niesen, and Nicholas Niesen; and seven great-grandchildren: Izebelle, Lexi, and Gavin Hughes, Kaitlyn, Aidan, and Colin Newburn, and Leviticus Niesen. Dick also leaves behind three sisters-in-law: Sue Niesen of Menasha, Pauline Niesen of Kaukauna, and Melda Johnson of Green Bay, and brother-in-law: Dave Zwick of Alaska. He also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Theresa, a sister Mary June (Don) Johnson, brothers Mark (Joann) Niesen, Tom Niesen, and Ken Niesen; and sisters-in-law: Marion (Skip) Woods, Laverne (Alan) Baerenwald, Lory (Dan) Maley, and Angie Zwick and brothers-in-law: Dick Johnson, Al (Evelyn), Richard (Vivian), Clarence (Laverne), and Nicholas (Zeta) Huisman.

She never held back time, money or friendship
She was born Barbara Niesen in Kaukauna, Wisconsin in 1948, to Herbert A. and Adeline J. (Eiting) Niesen. Barb married her soul mate Gordy Braun on May 31, 1991. Together they enjoyed travelling, work, gardening, mowing the lawn with her new Hustler mower. Barb once desired to be a clown and numerous examples adorned their home. As a young girl she often accompanied her dad on hunting and fishing trips. These interests were carried on to her adult life. Known as the neighborhood "Party Planner", many stories were shared during her final journey about the great times she shared with friends.
Special friends who loved and supported both she and Gordy in the past and on this recent journey include: The Black Creek Pickers; Cindy and Scott; Noble; Linda and Bill; Rusty, Carrie and Family; Shane, Leah, Trenton and Caitlin; Jay, Amy and Family; Tom and Connie; Geno and Jenny; The Birling Family; Jeff and Joan; Pat and Laurie; Gunny and Sharon; Terri and Mark and many, many others.In addition to her dear husband Gordy, she is survived by her family: Kathy (Sam) Neuman; Carol (Hank) Mandel; Jim (Diane) Niesen; Virginia (Ross) Holbrook; Eileen (Peter) Gossen; Jodi (Ken) Schott; Judy (Fred) Sommerfeld and many wonderful nieces and nephews. John R. Niesen, age 60, of Appleton, passed away March 29, 2008, from cancer. He was born Jan. 31, 1948, to Robert and Betty (Verfurth) Niesen of Kaukauna. He was a graduate of Kaukauna High School and the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse. John was the president of Badger State Painting for 14 years and was most recently employed at Omni Paint and Glass, Inc.
John is survived by his loving wife "Betts" Betty (Beecher) Niesen; his son Jeffrey, currently serving in Iraq; a daughter Jackie of Eau Claire; a step-daughter Sharon (Jamie) Dachel, Chippewa Falls; two step-grandchildren, Jacob and Megan Dachel; and his faithful pet, Zoey. He will be sadly missed by his mother Betty, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, numerous nieces and nephews, along with neighbors and friends. John's brothers and sisters include: Bob (Diana), Kiel; Bill (Donna), Minocqua; Patricia and Margaret Niesen, Yuma, AZ; Joann Stephens, Kaukauna; and Sue (Dave) Popp, Neenah.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Ann, his brother Donald; and his father Robert Niesen.
John enjoyed riding his motorcycle, telling jokes, and sharing the bounty of his garden and fruit trees. Always generous, John donated 14 units of whole blood and 333 platelet/ plasma donation units at the Appleton Community Blood Center.
A Memorial Gathering for friends and family will be held Saturday, April 5th at Highland Memorial Park (3131 N. Richmond Street, Appleton) from 11:30 a.m to 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be given to Children's Hospital of Milwaukee.

Joann Mary Stephens, age 62, of Appleton, passed away on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at Cherry Meadows after a battle with cancer. She was born April 24, 1955 in Kaukauna, the daughter of Robert and Betty (Verfurth) Niesen.
Joann was most recently employed as the Quality Manager at Surface Mounty Technology. Prior to her work there, she spent 20 years with the Plexus Corporation. A proud veteran, Joann also served in the US Air Force. Joann graduated from Kaukauna High School before obtaining a Bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a Master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Joann enjoyed spending time with her family, her Red Hat Group and any activity with water. She could be found daily either in her pool and hot tub or attending water aerobics classes. Joann's favorite vacation spot was Maui and she enjoyed many trips there with friends.
She is survived by two sons Robert (Nicole May) Stephens, Jr. and John (Dana) Stephens, and three beautiful grandchildren: Sidney May and Mya and Brett Stephens. She is also survived by her siblings Bob (Diana) Niesen, Bill (Donna) Niesen, Patricia Niesen, Margaret Niesen and Sue (Dave) Popp as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind a loving and devoted dog, Bella. She will be sadly missed by her family, friends and neighbors.
She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers, John and Donald Niesen.
A memorial service and celebration of Joann's life will be held at 11 am on Saturday, October 14, at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel. Friends may visit at the funeral chapel on Saturday October 14, from 10 am until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
