Obituary:
LANCASTER - Lyal E Bestul, age 79, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Lancaster, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006, as a result of injuries he received in an automobile-pedestrian accident in Mesa. Lyal was born November 5, 1926, in Amherst, Wis., the son of Caspar and Adeline (Peterson) Bestul. He spent his early years in Scandinavia, Wis., before moving to Fond du Lac as a freshman in high school.
After graduation, he entered the Merchant Marine in support of World War II efforts. He returned and entered the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for teacher certification in the sciences. He later taught at Durand High School and Black River Falls High School. In 1960, he left teaching and went to work for the Social Security Administration. He worked in the regional office in Eau Claire and the field office in Lancaster, before retiring from the regional center in Lakewood, Colorado, in 1989.
Lyal married Marilyn Dahlin on February 17, 1952, in New Richmond, Wis. Marilyn preceded Lyal in death on April 26, 1983. On June 4, 1986, Lyal married Ruby Chapin-Kaylor in Lakewood, Colo. They became permanent Arizona residents in 1998.
Lyal is survived by his wife, Ruby, Mesa, Ariz.; three sons, John (Becky), Little Chute, Dan (Sandy), Monroe, and Joe (Gloria), Peachtree City, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth, Norwood, N.J., Eric and Ethan, Little Chute, Amy and Alex, Monroe, and Thomas and Paul, Peachtree City, Ga.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 2, 2006, at 2 p.m. at CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH in Lancaster, with the Rev. David Froemming officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster; where military honors will be accorded by the William Pollock V.F.W. Post No. 2344 and the Richard Burns American Legion Post No. 109, both of Lancaster.
