    VERBETEN, ROBERT C. Home: Appleton U.S. Navy, Radioman, 19Verbeten was on duty station at the Ford Island Naval Air Station wh en he and an officer heard a plane approaching. "We went to go outside. Wh en we got to the door, we saw the meatball on the side of the plane. The o fficer said, 'Robert, that's a Jap.' We knew right then we were at war."MOST VIVID MEMORY: Verbeten made his way to the mess hall, that had been t urned into a hospital. "There were men in there that had jumped off the da maged ships into pools of burning oil. Their skins were falling off the m. It was the most horrible sight I ever saw."

    Verbeten, Robert C. AppletonAge 80, was called home by his Lord November 15, 2002. He was born to t he late Cornelius and Martha (Verhagen) Verbeten in Wrightstown on Decemb er 20, 1921. On May 14, 1929, he married Ruth Brockman in Appleton. She pr eceded him in death on March 31, 2002. Robert was a veteran of World War I I. While serving in the Navy, he was stationed in Pearl Harbor and surviv ed the bombing by Japanese air power. Robert worked for many years as a ca rpenter at Kimberly Clark, retiring in 1984. He was an avid golfer, enjoy ed playing cards, and especially enjoyed spending time at his cottage at P aya Lake. Robert was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivor Association, t he William Verhagen post #60 of the American Legion in Kimberly, and w as a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Appleton. He will always be rem embered for being a loving father and grandfather.Robert is survived by two sons: James (Ann) Verbeten of Appleton and the ir children Peter (Dawn) and Michael (Angela), and Randy (Sue) Verbet en of Union Grove and their children Nathan and Tally; two daughters: Myrt le (Kenneth) Shepard of Neenah and their children Stacey and Jason, and Be rtha (Bernard) Johnson of Neenah and their children John, Jamie, Sarah, El izabeth and Amanda; two great-grandchildren, Brittanie and Annabelle; fi ve sisters: Mary Burris, Lillian Ruckdashel, Deloris Barkholtz, Mary Lamer s, and Ida Fisher; and one brother, Clem Verbeten.Robert is preceded in death by his wife Ruth, parents, and five sibling s: Charles, William, Vincent, Ardina and Benjamin.The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 19, 20 02 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 302 North Morrison Street, Appleton, wi th Pastor John Baumann officiating. Friends will be received at the Wichma nn Funeral Home on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The William Verha gen Post #60 of Kimberly will be conducting military honors following t he funeral service at church and will also be conducting a prayer servi ce at 7:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
