    NO DANCING IN LITTLE CHUTE?
    A movement has been started in Little Chute that promises to develop into quite a sensational affair before it closes between the local priest and the young people and the dance hall owners. Some time ago Joseph VanCamp, who has a dance hall on Main Street, gave out notices that he was going to start up evening dancing parties at his place. This was his decision as the young people felt that Little Chute should be entitled to maintain social dances in the evening as well as other towns. It is claimed that Little Chute is the only place in the state where young people were thus restricted. Hearing of the proposal John Hammen, proprietor of the Hotel Hammen, also announced his intention to follow suit and both had engaged music for their opening parties. It came to the attention of Father Knegtel, pastor of St. John's church. St. John Church has never allowed dancing in the parish since it was organized by Father T. J. Vandenbroek in 1831. Father Knegtel has announced that he will resign before he will allow the rules of the church so long established to be broken and has served such notice on the owners of the two dance halls.

    Biography:
    JOHN HAMMEN, the genial proprietor of the oldest hotel stand in Little Chute, Wisconsin, has been a resident of Outagamie county all of his life, having been born in Vandenbroek township, October 23, 1862, a son of Henry and Antoinette (Van Handel) Hammen, natives of Holland who came to Little Chute in 1849 and 1853, respectively. They were married here in 1854, settled down to farming, and here spent the remainder of their lives, Mr. Hammen dying in July, 1905, and his wife twenty years before. They had a family of seven children, of whom only three survive. Mrs. Jamison of West Depere; George, a prominent farmer of Buchanan township, Outagamie county; and John. John Hammen received a common school education, and in later years opened his present establishment, operating it as a saloon and hotel, and he caters to some of the best trade in this section. He has a modern, well-kept house, fitted with numerous conveniences, and his trade is large and steady. Mr. Hammen was married in May, 1885, to Katherine Schumacher, also a native of Vandenbroek township, who died in 1887, leaving one son, John P., who is engaged in the ice business in Little Chute.
    In 1888 Mr. Hammen was married at West Depere to Ellen Williamson, daughter of John Williamson, who now lives in Alabama, but formerly a resident of Little Chute, whence he had come in 1848, and where Mrs. Hammen was born. Two children were born to this union, but both are now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Hammen are members of the Catholic Church, and he is connected with the Foresters. Mr. Hammen has been prominent in public affairs, serving as the first treasurer of the village of Little Chute, as a member of the school board for nine years, as a member of the county board for two years, and as president of the village during 1906 and 1907.

    Surrounded by love, Janet passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 28, 2010.
    She will be deeply and dearly missed by her children: Dianne (Eric Lillie), Mark (Kimberley), Gregg and her granddaughters Kristen, Jasmine, Erin, Deanna, Madison and many dear and devoted friends. Janet's parents (deceased) were Al and Kathryn Hartzheim of Kaukauna, Wisconsin. Janet's sister, Kay Van Grinsven, predeceased her. Siblings surviving are Margaret (Hartzheim) Hill and Charles (Kathy) Hartzheim.
    Jan will always be remembered for her warm smile, dedication to our youth and zest for living. Her seventy-five years were a very happy and meaningful journey where she shared her love, energy and talent with us. Janet was particularly proud of her dual citizenship, U.S.-Canada. As founder of Kuper Academy, Montreal, Canada, she leaves a legacy of her educational spirit for generations to come.
