Little Chute Historical society, autobiography of John Wilems;
Hello, my name is John Willems. I was born in Gemert, Noord Brabant Netherlands in 1843. I am the second oldest of 4 children born to Johannes and Ardina (Van Dommelin) Willems.

In 1850, on board the Ship Tushina, my family and I sailed to America from Holland. My brother, Anton, was born on board ship. We arrived in Little Chute the summer of 1850. It was said that our mother could have died on board ship, possibly in child birth, although there is no record of this, because when our father died in 1855, we became orphans. My father is more than likely buried in the old St John Cemetery which is now under the present church, as this cemetery was not created until 1858. We had only been in Little Chute for 5 years when he died! All of us kids were separated and relocated all over the Fox River Valley. In 1860, my sister, Harriet and I were located in Appleton where we are both servants to another family.

By 1861, the Civil War broke out. Being 18 years old, I decided to enlist. On September 26, 1861 I traveled to Camp Randall . I served with the 12^th Volunteer Regiment, Company F, in Kansas, Tennessee and Louisiana before eventually arriving in Mississippi for the battle of Vicksburg. I wrote many letters home during this time. Many of which are still around. (Show the one in the case.) My sister Harriet saved many of the letters; and they eventually ended up in the position of her grandson, Joseph Hietpas, a past commander of the Jacob Coppus American Legion here in Little Chute. In my letters, I asked about family and friends, everyone's health and asking to make sure money I was sending home had arrived. I wrote my last letter home on July 2, 1863.

The battle of Vicksburg would be my last battle. My company was positioned just south of the main attack as this map shows. It lasted from May 25 - July 4 1863. Just after the Confederate soldiers surrendered, I was sent to a company hospital where I died of an unspecified disease. A soldier in my company wrote this letter to my sister, Harriet. It is dated July 17, 1863. It reads:
"The solemn and awful duty dissolves upon me to inform you of the death of your brother. He died in the hospital near Vicksburg on the 16^th of July. I have not yet learned of what disease he died of. But his sickness was of short duration. I was with him most every day after he was taken sick until he died. He was a good boy and a boy I thought a great deal of. He was liked by everyone in the company. My friend this is a painful task for me to perform therefore I must be brief. I have some money of his which I will send to you the first opportunity. Any other particulars you wish to learn of him, write to me and I will inform you to the best of my ability. No more at present. Yours with respect, Lewis W. Bunker, Co F, 12^th Reg Wis Vol."

I was temporarily buried near the company hospital. After the war, I was moved to the present location in the Vicksburg Cemetery. This is a photo of my gravesite as it can be seen today. I have the honor of being the first war causality from Little Chute.

Notes:

John worked at the Little Chute Pulp Mill feeding sawdust into boilers. He also ran a 10-acr e farm on Washington Street. The original homestead stands as of the summer of 2000. My Uncle Paul remembers him as keeping very much to himself, preferring Dutch to English and never once speaking to his grandchildren.

Biography:
NICHOLAS HIETPAS, whose seventy-four acres of valuable farming land lie o ne and one-half miles from the .city limits of Appleton, and a like distan ce from the village of Little Chute, in Grand Chute township, was bo rn in what is now Vandenbroek township, Outagamie county, Wisconsin, Apr il 15, 1874, a son of Albert and Harriet (Williams) Hietpas, natives of Ho lland, the former born in Galden, August 28, 1838, and the latter in Geine rt, July 30, 1841. Albert Hietpas came to the United States with his paren ts in 1850, and immediately located in Outagamie county, where the grandfa ther became a landowner in Vandenbroek, then Kaukauna township, as did al so Albert Hietpas, who spent the remainder of his life in agricultural pur suits there and died November 26, 1907, his widow surviving him until Dece mber 12th of that year. Albert Hietpas served seven months as a memb er of Company G, Thirty-eighth Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, a nd although he never was wounded, he suffered a breakdown in health from w hich he never fully recovered. He and his wife had a family of twelve chil dren: John, a fireman in the paper mills at Little Chute; Henry, a farm er of Little Chute township; Anton, an agriculturist of Vandenbroek townsh ip; Peter and Barney, twins, the former deceased, and the latter a millwri ght in the village of Little Chute; Nicholas; Frank, who is deceased; Dina h, the wife of Lawrence Sall, a resident of Little Chute, employed in t he paper mills; Joseph, whois deceased; Mary, the wife of Anton Vervor t, a Vandenbroek township farmer; Joseph, employed in the paper mills at L ittle Chute; and Albert, who is deceased. Nicholas Hietpas received his ed ucation in district school No. 8, Kaukauna township, and as a young man st arted to work in the Kimberley mills, although he made his home with his f ather. When he had reached the age of twenty-eight years he had accumulat ed enough to purchase seventy-eight acres in Grand Chute township, later a dding twenty-six acres, but he subsequently sold a tract of thirty acre s, and now has seventy-four acres under cultivation, which he devotes to g eneral farming. His land is well equipped with solid, substantial and mode rn buildings, and his property is well cultivated and very productive. M r. Hietpas was married June 28, 1898, to Christena Weyenberg, who was bo rn June 14, 1872, in Little Chute, daughter of John and Mary (Johnson) Wey enberg, natives of Holland, the former born in Braband, in 1837, and the l atter in Gelderland in 1847. Mr. and Mrs. Hietpas have had four childre n: Dora, born June 19, 1899; John, born May 28, 1902; Jacob, born May 1 6, 1908; and Albert, born September 23, 1909. Mr. Hietpas is a member of S t. John's Catholic Church at Little Chute, and is connected with the Catho lic Order of Foresters. He is a democrat.

Nicholas Hietpas, 75, route 3, Appleton, died at his home at 8 o'clock th is morning following a short illness. He was born April 15, 1874 in the to wn of Grand Chute. Practically all of his life he operated the route 3 fa rm where he died. He was a member of the Vandenbroek Court No.450, Cathol ic Order of Foresters, Little Chute, and the Holy Name Scociety of the St. John's Catholic Church in Little Chute.Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Roman Salm, Appleton, four sons, Joh n, Jake, Bert and Harold all of Appleton, two brothers, John and Joseph Hi etpas, Little Chute, one sister, Mrs. Dinah Sol, Kaukauna and 29 grandchil dren.Services will be at 10 o'clock Saturday morning at the St.John's Church.The Right Rev. Msgr. John J. Sprangers, pastor, will be in cahrge. Buri al will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the Avaerkuilen Fun eral Home, Little Chute, after 7 o'clock Thursday evening. Rosary wi ll be recited at 8:15 both Thursday and Friday evening.

My Grandmothe r (Sophia Huiting ) kept hundreds of Holy Cards from St John's. Most are from Verkuilen's Funeral Home on Main St. The date of issuance is of course 2-3 days after the death date.Grandma died the morning of the day I (Jim Huiting) drove up to see her one last time. That afternoon all of Grandma's children and grandchildren in the area met at Grandma's home for a surprisingly joyous occasion. A lot of stress flew out the window that day! Obituary:
Joseph Hietpas, 93, formerly of Little Chute, died Friday, June 12, 2009, at St. Paul Villa where he resided the past 2 years. He was born September 5, 1915, in Little Chute, son of John and Mary (Weyenberg) Hietpas. Joe attended St. John Grade and High Schools and then went on to one year of business college. He was employed at Kimberly-Clark Corp. for 38 years. Joe enjoyed and was active in amateur plays and musicals during the 1930s, 40s & 50s. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II having served aboard the cruiser U.S. Birmingham which was a part of Admiral Halsey's 3rd fleet in the Pacific Ocean. He was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Little Chute. During the 1950's Joe sang for weddings for a number of years. He also sang with the barbershoppers and with St. John's adult choir for many years. He sang for funerals for more than 25 years. Joe was a member and past commander of the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post #258, Little Chute, since World War II. Many of these years in the Legion he was a part of the firing squad for military funerals. He enjoyed golfing for more than 40 years and was a member of Fox Valley Golf Course. He was a director of the Bank of Little Chute for 22 years and was on the board of directors for St. John Cemetery Association for many years. He planted many trees in the cemetery over the years and took pride in keeping the roads and trees in good condition. For many years he kept records of military veterans as they passed away making sure they were added to the list to receive an American flag on their grave each Memorial Day.
Joe is survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and two sisters-in-law: Albert, Frank and Angie; Sylvester and Rosella; five sisters and brothers-in-law: Ann and Ted VandenHeuvel, Sophia and Ted Huiting, Susan and Henry Kamps, Genevieve and Barney Lamers, and Della and Ervin Haessly.
The Mass of Resurrection will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2009, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, 323 S. Pine St., Little Chute, with Fr. James Hablewitz officiating. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 3 p.m. Monday until the time of the mass. Military honors will be performed by members of Jacob Coppus American Legion Post #258 following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Joseph's name.
The family wishes to express a special thank you to St. Paul Villa and St. Paul Hospice Services and Staff along with Dr. Brian Scott for their loving care and compassion for Joe.

William Hietpas, succum bs at 57, William P. Hietpas, 57, former member of the county board and ch airman of the town of Vandenbroek for many years, died at 540 Thursday nig ht in Kaukauna after a 10 day illness. His farm is on Route 4 Appleto n. Owner and operator of the Modern Shoe store in Kaukauna for the la st 26 years, he began his career in a shoe store in Appleton. Before his K aukauna business He operated stores in both Marshfield and Oshkosh. He w as elected to the County Board from the town of VandenBroek in 1945 and se rved as a member for 10 years. During that period he served on three maj or committees, the county sanitorium, purchasing and health committees. H ietpas was born April 17th, 1898, in the Little Chute area. Funeral servi ces will be held at 9:00 Monday morning at St. John Catholic Church Litt le Chute, with burial in the parish cemetery. Survivors include his wif e, Margaret, five daughters Mrs. Henry Tatro of Kaukauna, Mrs. Ted Lars on of Combined Locks, Mrs. Casey VanderZanden of Little Chute, Mrs. Willi am Mattern of Menasha, and Miss Margaret Ann Hietpas at home.

See Image Bernard J. Hietpas "Barney ", age 84, died Monday evening at Appleton Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born October 29th, 1899, in Little Chute. He started a service station and fuel oil home delivery service in 1929; he also operated at Tavern known as the Modern Bar in Kaukauna for many years; he then started Hietpas Motors, in 1946, selling Plymouth and DeSoto cars, he retired in 1969. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kaukauna, a fourth degree Knights of Columbus, and the Holy Name society. Survivors include three daughters: LaVerne and Anton, (Red) Schumann, of Fruitland Park Fla.; Gladys and Martin Jelenc, of Bradington Fla.; Mary and Dan Bork, of Kaukauna; a foster daughter, Lorna and Glenn Jost, of Norwalk California; four sons and three daughters in law: Gerald and Julia, of Fruitand Park Florida; Vincent, of New York, New York, Donald and Betty, of Kaukauna; Marvin and Eleanor, of Kaukauna; a sister in law: Mrs. Margaret Hietpas Pennings, of Little Chute; 26 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mathilda in 1975, a sister and a brother. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, with Reverend Mike Hoffmann officiating. Internment will be in St. John's cemetery, Little Chute.

A son Allan (M ary) Ver Voort of Madison, their children Kristin and Rachel. A daughter J illene (Ken) Dorn of Shiocton and their children Travis (Thi) Dorn, Sha ne (Paula) Dorn and Dr. Clint Dorn. A son Meldon (Debra) Ver Voort of Free dom her daughter Christina (Robert) Murphy. He is further survived by 10 g reat-grandchildren. He will also be missed by his brother Raymond (Bernic e) Ver Voort of Little Chute and his sister Cornelia (and the late Urba n) Coenen and by his wife's family Rosella (Ray) Vander Heiden, Neenah a nd Gordon (Blanche) Kerrigan, Kaukauna. John and Gladys farmed in the to wn of Freedom since 1943 and he was named Wisconsin Master Agriculturi st in 1982. He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom a nd was involved in numerous other activities including Chairman of the Out agamie County Drainage Board and Dairy Superintendent at the County Fair u ntil his death. Other activities include 44 years as a 4-H leader, Preside nt of the County and State 4-H Leaders, President of Outagamie Soil Improv ement Association, Director of Morning Glory Farms, President of County a nd Fox Valley Holstein Assoc. John was preceded in death by his parents, h is stepmother Margaret (Evers) Ver Voort, and his grandson Todd Landweh r. Others preceding him in death include his brother Peter, step-brother H ank Gloudeman, sisters Dora (Henry) Van Groll, Delia Van Groll, and Harri et (Joseph) Van Zeeland. Joe Vanden Heuvel, age 90, of Kaukauna, passed away in a Darboy assisted living facility on Sunday, November 23, 2008. Joe was born in the town of Vandenbroek on May 6, 1918, son of the late Theodore and Ann (Hietpas) Vanden Heuvel. In 1941, Joe married the former Lucille Arnoldussen; she preceded him in death in 1982. Joe served his country as a member of the United States Army, and worked for many years at Thilmany Pulp and Paper in Kaukauna and retired in 1980. In his younger years he enjoyed playing softball, and will always be remembered as a good card player. He was also a member of the Little Chute American Legion Post #258 and was a longtime member and volunteer of St. Vincent de Paul in Kaukauna.
Joe is survived by three children: Jack (Shirley) Van Den Heuvel of Appleton; Jerry (Sharon) Vanden Heuvel of Appleton; and Sue (Bob) Kneepkens of Neenah; five grandchildren: Tammy Van Den Heuvel, Kenneth Van Den Heuvel, Jim (Tamara) Vanden Heuvel, Joy (Matt) Lockery, and Kimberly Kneepkens; a great-granddaughter: Lauren Vanden Heuvel; two step great-granddaughters: Nikki Lockery and Brittany Lockery; and a sister: Blanche (Henry) Van Dera of Kaukauna.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lucille in 1982, brothers Maurice and Jim Vanden Heuvel, a sister Grace Vanden Heuvel, and an infant brother-in-law.
The funeral liturgy for Joe will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at ST. KATHARINE DREXEL PARISH (St. Al's Site) 2401 Main Avenue in Kaukauna with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating. VanDera, Blanche M., nee Van Den Heuvel, formerly of Kaukauna, age 92, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2013, at Eden Hospital, California. She had resided with her daughter Ellen & son in-law Claude who cared for her for several years and were at her side when God took her home. Blanche was born August 6, 1920, and grew up in Appleton. She was the daughter of the late Theodore and Anna (Hietpas) Van Den Heuvel. Blanche married Henry Van Dera on June 7, 1945 and they made their home in Kimberly. In 1954, they moved to the farm where she had grown up and farmed until 1970. In July 1978, they moved to Kaukauna to enjoy their retirement. Blanche and her husband enjoyed the summer months in Kaukauna and winter months in California. Blanche was a member of St. Aloysius Parish. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Her favorite retirement pastimes were cooking, baking, and enjoying her grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Paul J. Huiting, 84, passed away on Friday, June 1, 2012, in Cathedral City, California. He was born on May 10, 1928, to the late Theodore and Sophia (Hietpas) Huiting, in Little Chute. Paul went to St. John Grade School and graduated from St. John High School. After enduring Wisconsin winters for more than he wanted to, Paul moved to California, spending most of his adult life in and around the mountains of Southern California. Though he dearly loved and missed his family, California truly became "home."
Paul is survived by his two sisters, Germaine Schumacher and Marianne (Verl) Parker; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ted (Muriel) Huiting; a brother-in-law, Harold Schumacher.
Memorial services will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2012, at the Verkuilen Funeral Home, 101 Canal St., Little Chute, with Msgr. James Vanden Hogen officiating. Dad was born into one of the most difficult s ituations imaginable: His father had just taken out a loan to start up a a uto repair/resale shop on Wilson St in Little Chute, the Depression stru ck and then Ted Sr. died just 2 months after dad was born. Grandma Soph ie raised 4 children by herself w/o SS and never lost the home on Washingt on St ; safe to say they did not have a pot to pee into. Both the John Hie tpas and Geo Weyenberg families helped out. At age 10, Dad went to live wi th Nick Hietpas (Grandma's uncle) at the Hietpas Dairy Farm on French Ro ad (just SW of the culvert crossing between "OO" and 96. This mea nt up at 5 every day before school. He was befriended by the Joe & Minn ie Brockman Family who had a farm (NW of the current "OO" and 141 overpas s) nearby. Dad and Maurice (Uncle Maurice) remained long-time friends. Aft er finishing school, Dad continued to work at Hietpas's then was draft ed in 1951. He served as a forward observer with an Artillery battali on of the 7th Div in Korea (imagine a 6'4' blond Dutchman with a radio ant enna - sniper practice!). After the war, Dad got married to his Army buddy 's sister - Mom - and went to work for Dick Oudenhoven Construction. Alo ng the way, Dad built his own home on French Road across form Hietpas's Da iry. About 1967 Dad help start the Golden Yolk Egg Ranch financed by neigh bor and ex-co-worker Paul Kerkoff. Dad ran the Farm from 1967-1995 wh en it was dismantled. In 1991, Dad sold the French Road home and after Gra ndma's death, moved into the home he was born in. Theodore J. "Ted" Huiting, age 74 of Little Chute died unexpectedly Sunda y, October 10, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center, Oshkosh peacefully with his f amily by his side after a short illness. He was born January 6, 1930 in Li ttle Chute son of Theodore and Sophia (Hietpas) Huiting. Ted married Muri el G. Schmitz November 4, 1953, celebrating 50 happy years of marriage tog ether mostly in a home Ted built by hand. Muriel preceded Ted in death Ju ne 8, 2004.
Mr. Huiting was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Little Ch ute. Through his life, he was a farmer, mason, and managed the Golden Yo lk Ranch. Ted was a true handy-man, there was "nothing he couldn't fix a nd nothing he couldn't break." He spent his life surrounded in "Paradise ", residing in Little Chute. He was a passionate fisherman and hunter w ho enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Mr. Huiting enjoyed "t he trailer" at Berry Lake with his family. Ted was a member of the Jacob C oppus American Legion Post #258, Little Chute. He was a U.S. Army veter an of Korea, having served from 1951 to 1953 with the 7th Armored Divisi on in artillery. He made friends for life and enjoyed the longtime friends hips with his card club. Priscilla "Perce Kamps" Meulemans, 88, passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2016 due to Alzheimer's.
She was born on January 30, 1927 in Little Chute to Henry and Susan (Hietpas) Kamps. Perce was a graduate of Kimberly High School. Because of the death of her father, Priscilla started tending bar at the age of 16 for her mother, then Sue's Bar . She continued working for her brother Jerry who took over the bar calling it Jerry Kamps Bar until he retired and she was 72 years old. Priscilla was a dedicated bartender and was honored to serve many of the World War II veterans when they returned home. It was at this time that she met her husband Gordon Meulemans who was a veteran and they were married on May 14, 1949. Priscilla was a faithful member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Combined Locks. She and Gordy enjoyed winters in Yuma Arizona with their many friends.
Priscilla will be missed by Gordy her loving husband of 67 years, her son Keith (Susan) Meulemans, two grandsons; Matthew of Nashville, Tennessee, and Graham of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is further survived by her brother Jerry (Rosemary) Kamps, a sister Theresa Lamers, a sister-in-law, Isabel Sheleski and a brother-in-law, Don Reitzner, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. After graduating from Kimberly High School in 1953, Duane joined the Navy where he devotedly served his country from 1954-1957 and saw the world.
Following his service, Duane fell in love with Mary Vanden Hogen whom he would marry at St. John's Parish in Little Chute on June 16, 1959. Duane and Mary would share almost 57 wonderful years of marriage together and would have four children; Kathy (Rick) Johnson (children Maddy, Erik and Paul) of Milwaukee, Mike (Julie) Hietpas (children Matt and Katie) of Sun Prairie, Karen (Bob) Armstrong (children Mitch (Erin), Maggie, and John) of Waukesha, and Dan (Stacy) Hietpas (children Alec, Peyton, Parker and Hayden) of Darboy.
Duane worked at United Groceries/Roundy's in Little Chute for 28 years until it closed in 1986. He then worked for Riverside Paper at the Kerwin Mill in Appleton until he retired in 1997.
Duane was an avid Kimberly High School sports fan rarely missing a basketball or football game for almost 60 years. Duane was an encyclopedia of Kimberly basketball and football facts, including teams, records, and players. For many years Duane and Mary were members of the Kimberly Booster Club and he was also part of a committee that planned the details of the new Kimberly High School. Known for having one of the nicest lawns and maintaining the shiniest cars in Kimberly, Duane also loved to golf (scoring a hole-in-one at Grand View in Hortonville) and closely follow his children and grandchildren's many sporting events.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, his father and mother-in-law George and Anna Vanden Hogen, sister and brother-in-law Jim and Darlene Haber, brother-in-law Jim Hartjes, and nephew Steve Hartjes.
Besides his wife, four children and twelve grandchildren, Duane is survived by brother Al (Pam) Hietpas and sisters Grace Hartjes, Mary Jo (Tim) Paltzer, and Brenda Griener. Duane is further survived by brother-in-law's Father Paul Vanden Hogen and Jerome (Maureen) Vanden Hogen, and sister-in-law's Rita (Ves) Vander Heiden, Sister Paula Vanden Hogen, Sister Paulyn Vanden Hogen, Judy (Dave) Simon, and Dorothy (Bob) Nelson.
The funeral service for Duane will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit Parish, 620 E. Kimberly Ave., Kimberly, with Father Jim Vanden Hogen officiating and Father Paul Vanden Hogen concelebrating. Friends will be received from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Duane's name.

On September 27, 1937 I entered this world as Darlene Mary Hietpas, the daughter of Sylvester and Rosella (Kamps) Hietpas.
I was raised in Kimberly and graduated from Kimberly High School in 1956. On September 24, 1957 I married Jim Haber at Holy Name Catholic Church in Kimberly. Jim and I lived in Kimberly our entire married life and raised our 6 children here. While my children were young, I stayed home and took in babysitting. Following that, I worked for my son-in-law Tom at The Sleep Shop in Appleton for many years but my life was devoted to my family. I am so proud of my children, I taught them to love, be strong and be generous and it is with great pride I see my grandchildren caring on the same traits.
I spent many hours in my chair watching the Brewers (I especially loved Hank), Packers, the Kimberly High School girls, boy's basketball games, and football games.
Jim passed away on July 12, 2011 and since that time I needed my family and they have not failed me.
To my sister, Brenda Grienier, who became my driver, lunch date, caregiver, and companion, thank you! Without you, I could not have stayed in my home and I am so thankful for that.
To my sister-in-law-No, my sister, Mary (Duane) Hietpas who was my rock, spiritual leader and baker, thank you!
To my sister Mary Jo (Tim) Paltzer, who became my scheduler and cleaner, thanks for taking control.
To my sister, Grace Hartjes who has always been my best friend and confidant. I thank you for the years you stood by my side, encouraged me, and supported me.
To my brother Al (Pam) Hietpas who kept me up to date on the Kimberly Papermakers and was a "sister sitter". Thank you!
Thank you to my neighbors, Dave and Julie and Nate & Anna for keeping an eye out for me, I appreciate your kindness. To my little "cookie monsters" thanks for the smiles!
I am survived by my children: Vicky Haber, Kimberly; Jane and Tom Pendergast, Darboy (A special thanks to Jane for all the hours she spent caring for mom) Lori & Joe Hubers, Darboy; Mark & Veronica Haber, Kenora Ontario, Canada; Kelli & Boyd Dietzen, Combined Locks; Paula Haber (Chad Smith) Fountain Hills AZ.
I enjoyed watching my children and grandchildren in their sports and other endeavors. It has been a joy to watch them mature into intelligent and caring young people.

Preceding me in death are: my husband, Jim Haber; my parents, Sylvester and Rosella Hietpas; my parents in law, Leo and Ruth Haber; brothers in law: James Hartjes, Jerry Haber, Pierre Grienier and my nephew Steve Hartjes.
I thank my family and friends for a wonderful life. I love you all very much. After battling my entire life with many, many surgeries and with two cancers…on January 22, 2015 I am free!

Kimberly - Alan J. Hietpas, age 74, passed away peacefully in the early morning of Tuesday May 15, 2018 after battling recent complications from numerous chronic conditions. Alan "Al" was born in the family home in Kimberly, WI to the late Sylvester and Rosella (Kamps) Hietpas. He was a 3-sport athlete at Kimberly High School, graduating in 1962. Al attended St. Norbert College in De Pere [he was recently awarded the distinction of Golden Knight as a 50 year alumnus], where he lettered in basketball and was a member of the Alpha Delta Gamma fraternity, graduating in three and a half years with a business degree.
On a beautiful sunny day of April 16, 1966 Al would marry his high school sweetheart Patricia "Pam" Maas at Holy Name Parish in Kimberly. Almost immediately following their wedding, Al enlisted in the US Army, where he served for three years eventually earning the rank of Sergeant and being stationed in Marin County CA and Schweinfurt Germany. Al and Pam would share 52 wonderful years of marriage together and would have two children: Tref (Patty) Hietpas [children Connor (Michele Leslie), Logan (Zion) [child Lilia], and Korey] of Darboy, and Marc (Kristen Cogswell) Hietpas [children Rose and Autumn], of Oshkosh.
After his military service, Al and family moved to various locations as employment required -spending time in WI, IL, MD, and AR, but eventually settling back home in Kimberly after building their dream home on the Fox River near Sunset Park and working at Kimberly-Clark in Neenah as a "glorified supply sergeant" for 30 years, until his retirement in 2004.
Al was a very active member of Holy Spirit Parish. Volunteering numerous hours as a commentator, lector, server, painter, marriage counselor, and as a church representative for Grand Horizons, among various other activities as needed. He loved people and serving others.
Al was an avid golfer, playing 150 rounds last year while carrying a 13 handicap into this season. He and Pam were active members of Fox Valley Golf Club where he spent many enjoyable hours as a friend & competitor. He was President of Northeastern Wisconsin Golf Association Seniors. Al had an amazing level of recall pertaining to his golf game - he could remember specific details about any hole on any course he played in recent history.
Al was a huge Kimberly High school sports fan, rarely missing a game/event and attending with his brother Duane for decades. He was a vocal supporter of every "Kimberly kid", but was especially proud of his sons & grandsons [six State Championships in football] as Papermakers. Al was personally invested in knowing the players and their families, and he and Pam were not only members of the Kimberly Booster Club, but Al also served on the Kimberly School Board for 12 years and was a member of the community planning committee involved in the design of the new high school.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law: Ted Maas, brother: Duane Hietpas, sister and brother-in-law: Jim and Darlene Haber, brother-in-law: Jim Hartjes, and nephew: Steve Hartjes.
Besides his wife, two children, five grandchildren, and great-granddaughter, Al is survived by sisters: Grace Hartjes, Mary Jo (Tim) Paltzer, and Brenda Grenier. He is further survived by his mother-in-law: Jeanne Maas, brothers-in-law: Mike (Jeanne) Maas, Jeff (Bonnie) Maas, and sisters-in-law: Mary Hietpas, Marijo (Tom) Bunbury, Becky (Brett) Haskell, Annette (Al) Pannier, and Sue Gratke.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at HOLY SPIRIT CATHOLIC CHURCH, 620 E Kimberly Ave, Kimberly. Visitation will be from 9:00 am - 11:00 am followed by memorial mass at 11:00 am, and committal at Appleton Highland Memorial Park mausoleum at 2:30 pm, 3131 N Richmond St, Appleton. Obituary:
Betty Vandenberg, age 83 of Darboy, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, August 17, 2014 at Cherry Meadows Hospice, surrounded by her loving family. Betty was born April 27, 1931, daughter of the late Nick and Esther (Van Handel) Hietpas and as a young girl attended school at St. John's in Little Chute. As a young woman, she worked at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton until her marriage to Gordon Luniak on April 26, 1952. Together they operated a dairy farm in the Sherwood area until Gordon's death on August 3, 1960. Betty worked for a time then, at the Darboy Club, and on June 27, 1964 married Francis Vandenberg in Darboy. He preceded her in death on June 11, 1992. She returned to her work at the Darboy Club in the late 1980's and didn't retire until 2008! Betty loved cooking and baking, planning family gatherings, embroidering, working puzzles, gardening, and driving her lawn tractor. She found her most peace and comfort spending time with her loved ones.
Betty is survived by seven children: Francis H. Vandenberg of Chicago; John M. (Patricia) Vandenberg of the Town of Menasha; Noreen R. (Robert Petersen) Monte of Lakeview, Oregon; Myron R. (Suzanne) Luniak of Menasha; Daniel J. Vandenberg of Appleton; Todd M. (Kelly) Vandenberg of Appleton; and Jodi A. Hietpas, Robert J. "Bob"Robert J. Hietpas, age 66, passed away December 8, 2005, as the resu lt of an accident on January 5, 2005. He was born August 4, 1939, to Jose ph and Rose (Janssen) Hietpas, in Appleton, where he graduated from Applet on High School in 1957. Following his graduation, Bob served with the U. S. Air Force for four years. Bob had been employed by the Appleton Post-Cr escent for 30 years, retiring in 1996. He coached Little League Baseball a nd Pop Warner Football and was an avid Cub and Packer fan. Bob enjoyed gol f, watching his grandchildren's ball games and his afternoon Social Cl ub at Grumpy's. Hietpas, William C., Seymour William C. Hietpas, age 79, of Seymour, died late Tuesday evening, Octob er 28, 2003 at the Appleton Medical Center following a battle with cance r. He was born March 8, 1924 in Wisconsin, the son of the late Martin a nd Estelle (Heup) Hietpas. On December 28, 1948 he was united in marria ge to Armella "Mel" Van Heeswyk in New York. She preceded him in dea th on January 6, 1999.Bill graduated from St John's High School, Little Chute in 1942. Upon grad uation he entered the U.S. Coast Guard serving during WWII. From 1954 unt il 1961 he was a guard at the State Reformatory and from 1961 until 19 64 he served on the De Pere Police Department. In 1964 through 1970 Bill s erved as the Police Chief for the City of Seymour. In 1970 he was employ ed with St Norbert's Security. From 1973 until 1987 he was an instruct or in Police Science at the Fox Valley Technical College. In 1992 he beca me the municipal judge in Seymour until his retirement. He was a memb er of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Seymour and a member of the Kn ights of Columbus and the Seymour American Legion, Post #106. James D. Hietpas, 80, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at home surrounded by his family.
James was born on April 16, 1936 to Arnold and Henrietta (Jansen) Hietpas. On April 22, 1957 he was united in marriage to Florence Verbockel at St. Francis Hollandtown. Jim worked at Thilmany's for 37 years until his retirement at 55. He enjoyed spending time with his family at the cottage on Lake Poygan. Jim was an avid Packer and college football fan and loved his dogs and cats. He loved following his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in their sporting events. Spending time with his hunting buddies at the Bain hunting cabin was always a special time. He also loved going to his son's hunting cabin in Iola. Fishing and hunting were among his favorite pastimes along with spending time in his workshop, he never sat still, Jim was always doing something. Jim was a member of St John Catholic Church in Little Chute most of his life and recently a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sherwood.
Jim is survived by his wife, Florence, three children; Mary Kay (Gary) Anholzer, Nancy (Steven Hostettler) Hietpas, and Daniel Hietpas, three grandchildren; Danielle (Kevin) Santry, Cole (Savannah) Anholzer, Joshua Hietpas, four great grandchildren; Mason Santry, Liam Santry, Clayton Anholzer, and Ella Anholzer, sisters-in-law Helen Guilfoyle of Port Edwards, Jeanne Verbockel of Kaukauna, and Marilyn Verbockel of Shiocton, a brother-in-law Ralph Verbockel of Stockbridge, special friends the Joe "Lew" Bain family and Bob Otto, other relatives and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, a son Jeffrey Hietpas, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Alvina and Henry Verbockel, brothers-in-law; Alvin Verbockel, Henry Verbockel and Jim Guilfoyle and sister-in-law Betty Verbockel.
Jim, Florence and family would like to give his hospice nurse Barbie a special thank you for all the loving care she gave him, He kept saying he couldn't have got a better one.
The funeral liturgy for Jim will be held on Monday, March 27, 2017 at 11:00 AM at SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH, N 369 Military Road in Sherwood. A time of visitation will be held on Monday from 9:00 AM until the time of the service at the church.

Harold was born July 22, 1931 in Little Chute; son of the late Jo seph and Josephine (Hietpas) Evers. He married Martha Wyngaard, February 1 3, 1954 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Little Chute where he w as a lifetime member. Harold was in the Army, serving his country in the K orean War. Harold was employed at International Paper until his retireme nt in 1993 and belonged to the quarter century club. He was a member of t he Little Chute American Legion, Post 258 and the Knights of Columbu s. She was a member of Holy Na me Catholic Church, the Ladies of Holy Name, and enjoyed traveling, shoppi ng, playing cards, and noon luncheons with her daughters and friends. Leo J. Hietpas, 77, Allouez, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at Bellin Memorial Hospital after a brief illness due to a brain tumor. Leo was born on May 3, 1938 in Little Chute the son of the late Norbert and Josephine (VandenHeuvel) Hietpas. He was a graduate of St. Norbert College with a B.S. Degree in Math and furthered his studies receiving his Masters Degree in Math Education at Illinois Institute of Technology. On June 2, 1962 he married the former Karen Garvey at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom and the couple enjoyed almost 54 years together. Leo started his teaching career in Coleman and later entered the Green Bay School system teaching at Edison Junior High and East High School until his retirement in 1997 after 35 years of service. Leo was a faithful and dedicated member at Resurrection Catholic Church for many years giving of his time in many areas and assisted on various committees. He loved to read and greatly enjoyed golfing and playing cards especially Bridge and Sheepshead.
Leo is survived by his wife Karen, his children Marilee Kaas, Brian (Greta) Hietpas, Erin (Mark) Bal; 8 grandchildren Emily and Brandon Kaas, Claire, Sam, and Emma Hietpas, Ryan, Eric and Kevin Bal; 3 brothers and 3 sisters-in-law Carl (Lois) Hietpas, Gene (Margie) Hietpas, Gregg (Betty) Hietpas, 1 sister and 1 brother-in-law Arlene (Cal) Kaufman, 1 sister-in-law Joan (Mike) Bohlmann, 1 brother-in-law Bill (Pauline) Garvey. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law John and Bernice Garvey.
Gathering of family and friends will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at Resurrection Catholic Church 333 Hilltop Drive, Allouez. A Parish Wake Service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Visitation will continue after 9:30 A.M. on Monday, May 2, 2016 until the time of the Funeral. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. Bishop Robert Morneau officiating. Entombment at Allouez Chapel Mausoleum.
