    Elmer Johnson, 425 Klein Street, has completed his thirteenth year as bridge tender. He began in May, 13 years ago when B. W. Fargo was mayor. Johnson estimates' to have opened and closed the main street bridge over 10,000 times and the record shows over 14,500 boats have passed through up to the present time. Over the years, he has not had one accident while handling the big structure.

    Betty Jane (Elizabeth) Nieman (nee Johnson), age 86, of Appleton passed away Thursday, August 15, 2013 at Grand Horizon West. She was born on October 25, 1926 to the late Elmer and Martha (Schmidli) Johnson in Kaukauna. She was baptized, confirmed and married at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Kaukauna. Betty graduated from Kaukauna High School and after high school; she worked for five years at Kaukauna Club Cheese Factory. On May 28, 1949 she was united in marriage to Orville C. Nieman. They owned and operated a family dairy farm in Greenville before retiring to Hortonville. Betty loved taking trips to California to visit her sister, also small bus trips and a special trip to Hawaii. She was a homemaker who loved to cook and take care of her family.
    Survivors include: one son; Gary (Lisa) Niemann, Greenville, three daughters; Judy (Ken) Boksa, Land O' Lakes, Marlene (Steve) Borowski, Larsen and Lori (Joe) Miller, Appleton, grandchildren; Tracy (Tony) Haase, Ted (fiancée Kim) Boksa, Steve (Theresa) Borowski, Bradly (special friend Veronica) Borowski, Stephanie (Eric) Mustin, Brian (special friend Tracey) Herrman, Chad (Katie) Herrmann, Cory Herrmann, Derek Herrmann, Autum (special friend Willie) Miller, Lindsay (fiancé Brent) Miller, Emily and Caitlin Niemann, as well as numerous great grandchildren. She is further survived by sisters and brothers-in-law, Hazel Furman, Mrytle (Victor) Seefeld, Jane Johnson, Eileen Johnson, Joan Johnson, Nick Van Eyke and Louie Voster; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    Betty is preceded in death by her husband Orville in 2004, a daughter Diane Herrmann in 2012 and brothers; Robert, Richard and Jim Johnson; sisters Lillian Verstegan, Arlene Van Eyck and Joyce Voster. Also, brothers-in-law Stanley Verstegan and Shirley Furman.
    Funeral services for Betty will be held at 11:00AM, Sunday, August 18, 2013, at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N Richmond St with the Rev. David K. Eggert officiating. Friends and family may call at the funeral home from 10:00AM until the time of service. Burial will take place at Highland Memorial Park.
    The Nieman family would like to thank Grand Horizons West and Southern Care Hospice for their care and compassion for Betty.

    Dennis Allan "Rueben" Verstegen, Little Chute, age 63, passed away unexpectedly on July 8, 2017 at home. He was born on June 30, 1954, son of the late Stanley and Lillian (Johnson) Verstegen.
    Dennis was a loyal employee of 36 years at the paper mill in Kimberly through all the changes in ownership until it closed in September 2008 under the direction of New Page. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and liked to spend time outdoors. He enjoyed sharing his stories with friends and family. Dennis loved his family and was very proud of his eight grandchildren.
    Dennis will forever be remembered by his three daughters, Jennifer (Terry) Cornelius and their two children Levi and Payton, Stephanie (David) Weber and their three children Jackson, Ava, and Bailey. Melanie (Todd) Wyland and their three children Evan, Emma, and Madelyn. He is survived by his siblings: Gayle (John) Reider and their three children Jeanna (Mark) Rodriguez, Leah (Andy) Lancour, Kristina Reider; Cathy (Mark) Mantei and their two children Sean (Erika) Mantei and Jessica Mantei; Sharon Verstegen (Dale Siebers), and Amy (Steve) Sprister and their three children Mikayla, Jake and Dylan. He was preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Lillian (Johnson) Verstegen, and his brother John Verstegen.
    The family would like to express a special thank you to Heartland Home and Healthcare, especially his nurse Christy. A special thank you to the Kaukauna Fire Department, the Fox Valley Metro Police Department and the staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Appleton WI.
    A funeral service for Dennis will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 14, 2017 at BOETTCHER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 2401 Fieldcrest Dr., Kaukauna with Deacon Bruce Corey officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in his name is being established.
