    taken from Son-in-law Edward Bowerman's Biography;
    Joseph Nagreen was a furniture dealer and undertaker, occupations which he followed throughout a long career, his retirement occurring in 1898. In 1861 he enlisted in Company F, Thirteenth Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and when his service had expired he reenlisted in the same regiment and served until the close of the war. He was a brave and faithful soldier and was an active participant in some of the bloodiest engagements of the war, but the only injury he received serious enough to cause his confinement in the hospital was a sunstroke which he suffered before Vicksburg

    Biography:
    ORLANDO NAGREEN, who is cultivating eighty acres of farming land situated in section 5, Maine township, is a native of DeKalb county, Illinois, where he was born November 19, 1862, a son of Joseph and Sarah (Thompson) Nagreen. Joseph Nagreen, who was a native of Austria, came to America in the early '50s, settling in Illinois. From Sycamore, that State, he enlisted at the outbreak of the Civil War, in Company F, Twentieth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, serving three years. Mr. Nagreen had previously seen three and one-half years' service in the Austrian army, during which he had never been wounded, but during the Civil War he received a wrist wound in addition to suffering a sun-stroke. After the war he engaged in his trade of cabinet-making until his eyesight failed, about 1885, and he is now living retired in Appleton, at the age of eighty-seven years. His wife, who is a native of Pennsylvania, is seventy-seven years old, and they have been the parents of ten children, of whom Orlando was the fifth in order of birth. At the age of twelve years Orlando Nagreen commenced working for wages on the farms in the vicinity of this home, continuing thus until he was nineteen years old, when he began the manufacture of wooden pumps, also drilling artesian wells, and so continued for about eight years. He then went into the mines east of Ironwood, where he operated a steam drill for a company in Appleton one year. In June, 1889, Mr. Nagreen purchased his present farm, which was mostly wild land at that time, but he now has sixty acres under cultivation and twenty acres of wood land, his farm being neatly fenced with barbed and woven wire. His basement barn was built in the summer of 1902 and his present residence was built during his second year on this place, but he intends to replace this with a new one in the near future. He is engaged in general farming and stock raising, making a specialty of dairying and hog raising. He is a member of the Fraternal Reserve Association, as is also his wife, and is a Republican in politics, having served for two years as supervisor of his township. On August 2, 1890, Mr. Nagreen was married to Mrs. Addie Diemel, who was born July 29, 1866, daughter of Thomas and Margaret Allen. She is the widow of Jacob Diemel, and had two children by her first marriage: George, of Aniwa, Wisconsin; and Orville, married and living in Outagamie county, the father of one child. Three children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Nagreen, of whom one died in infancy; Sarah Margaret was born November 18, 1895; and Raymond Artie was born February 13, 1903.

    Occupation:
    Charles Nagreen (1870 - 1951) invented the hamburger. The Seymour Community Historical Society of Seymour, Wisconsin, credits Charlie Nagreen with the invention of the hamburger. He's known as "Hamburger" Charlie Nagreen. At the age of 15 he sold meatball sandwiches at the 1885 Seymour Fair. One day he had an idea. He flattened his meatball, cooked it on the grill, placed it between two slices of bread, and named it a hamburger. The Historical Society explains that Nagreen named the hamburger after the Hamburg steak with which local German immigrants were familiar. The hamburger caught on quickly with the crowds. Everyone loved them. In Seymour Wisconsin there stands a monument in honor of Hamburger Charlie Nagreen.

She has been a resident of Appleton all her life. She graduated from Appleton High School, which was the Morgan School, with the class of 1934.
    Violet was formerly employed by the Appleton School District as Payroll Clerk at Morgan Building. Elden Broehm was also in that office. She retired in July 1976. She was previously employed by the Institute of Paper Chemistry, City Clerk's Office, and First English Lutheran Church as a secretary. Violet married Roy G. Raess on October 26, 1940. He passed away in November 1971. She married Willard Bray on July 7, 1973. He passed away in August, 1980. Violet was married to Erwin Gauerke on November 7, 1981. Erwin passed away on March 10, 1998. All three marriages were solemnized at First English Lutheran Church; Pastors F. C. Reuter, Leonard Ziemer, and A. E. Norson.
    She has been an active member of First English Lutheran Church: the Judith Circle, Altar Guild, and Counting Member. She is also a member of two Rook circles, and a member of Women of the Moose, Chapter #404, filling a chairman chair every year, since 1973. Violet also has been a national and local Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons, Chapter #287 since 1973, filling a chairperson every year, first as Membership Chairman and now Sunshine Chairman as of June 2001.
    Violet is survived by a daughter, Cassandra Anne (Alan) Erdmann-Rothlisberg, Kansas; a son: James (Diana) Raess, Couer d'Alene, Idaho; seven grandchildren: Patrick Erdmann, Madison; Jennifer (Todd) Wolfe, Olympic Valley, CA; John Raess, Grafton, WI; Robert (Amy) Ziehm, Plymouth, WI, and their children, Jared, Parker, and Brianna; Jodi (Dan) Vollbrecht, Elkhorn, WI and their children, Austin, Rebecca, Rachel, and Andrew; Steven Raess of Tempe, Arizona; and Danniel Layner and her child, Brandon of Tempe, Arizona; step-children: Edward (Joan) Gauerke, Townsend; Norbert (Ardis) Gauerke, Hortonville; Ruth Rucks and Larry (Jeralyn) Gauerke, Appleton; step-grandchildren: Jeffrey (Lisa) Gauerke, Appleton; Debbie (Jeff) Herrernon, Shawano; John (Rhonda) Gauerke, Merryfield, MN; Deanne Gauerke, Green Bay; James (Patty) Gauerke, Forest Lake, MN; friends, Jim (Judy) Ziehm of Waldo. She is further survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Eva Nagreen and Harriet Theisen; and brother Romey Nagreen.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at First English Lutheran Church with Pastor Mike Dismer officiating. Entombment will be at Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for First English Lutheran Church Renovation Fund.

    Grace A. Lane, age 85, passed away December 12, 2010 in Jensen Beach FL. Grace was born on October 4, 1925 in the Town of Maine, WI daughter of Donavan and Eda ( Mahler) Nagreen. She married Dallas (Ray) Lane in 1950 and he preceded her in death in 1995.
    Grace is survived by her children, David (Marianne) Lane, Darryl Lane, Daniel (Chris) Lane, Gail (Chuck) Schwalen, Gloria (Randy) Verstegen, Wendy (Tom) Jacobson, Donavan (Jeanne) Lane, Richard (Lori) Lane, and her sister, Ramona (Eugene) Klebs. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.She was a loving mother, grandmother and sister, and a good friend to many. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
    A funeral service for Grace will be held on Friday, December 17, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Valley Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Town of Maine.
