Edward M. Laessig and Amelia Frick & Their DescendantsEdward M. Laessig was born 10 March 1858 in Green Bay, Wisconsin to Edwa rd Laessig and Jeanette Baenen Laessig. On 6 April 1884 he married Amel ia Frick in Wausau, Marathon County, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of Fr ederick Frick of Athens. Known family of Amelia's are a brother Frank Fri ck of Athens and a sister Bertha Miller of Oregon, probably Wisconsin.Edward M. Laessig died 18 March 1929 and Amelia died 21 Nov. 1947. Jeanette immigrated wi th her father,step-mother, Cornelia (Van Grunderbeek) and siblings. Jeanette remain ed in Chicago and married Edward circa 1856 or 57, and her family mov ed to the town of Scott, Brown County, Wisconsin, to a small village kno wn as Bay Settlement, near Green Bay. Ed and Jeanette's first child, Edwa rd M. Laessig was born in Green Bay on 10 March 1858. Their next three chi ldren: Mary, Henry and Augusta, were born in Chicago. Edward was Luther an and Jeanette Catholic. The family lived at 81 West Liberty Stree t. It is described as thenorth side of West Liberty, between South Can al and South Jefferson' and 'N.B. Mitchell is the street one block sou th of Liberty', in a Chicago city directory of 1860-1861. The directory a lso stated that Edward worked at J.C.W. Bailey & Co. as a laborer 1865 - 1 866 edition.Birth records indicate that the family relocated to Green Bay, Wiscons in by the year 1867 when daughter Philomena "Minnie" was born. Cornelia, F red, Frank and Charles were likewise born in that area. Son Louis, "Stoner ", daughters Julia and Anna were later born in Marathon County, Wiscons in where the family relocated to Webertown (Weber), a small settleme nt on the Big Eau Pleine River, on the north side of the river.A sawmil l, Catholic Church, store, post office and homes were located on the sou th side of the river.

Francis Hubert" Frank" Laessig born 30 March 1873 married Mary K. Sawyer b orn 22 Oct. 1873. She died 13 Aug. 1907. Frank then married Mary Web er on 29 September 1909. Mary Weber was born 21 March 1887, daughter of C hristian and Anna Kaiser Weber.
*Henry Weber, husband of Minnie Laessig, was the son of Michael Weber a nd Elizabeth Kaiser Weber. Henry's brother Christian Weber was the found er of Weber Settlement. Christian Weber and his wife Anna Kaiser, daught er of Andreas Kaiser and Magdalena Esslinger Kaiser, were the parents of M ary Weber Laessig.

Edward Laessig, Sr. the patriarch of our central Wisconsin USA Laessig clan, was born in Saxony, Germany 5 July 1835. As a young man he came to America in the year 1855 according to the 1860 Chicago, Cook County, Illinois census records. It is possible that he came with his brother, as a record of two young men has been found, "Eduard Lessig age 21" and "Robert Lessig age 24" sailed from Bremen to New York on the ship "Orpheus" arriving in the USA 1 September 1855. His naturalization papers have not been located. According to family, it was in Chicago that Ed met Jeanette Baenen, born 6 January 1836, an immigrant from s'Hertogenbosch, Holland. Ed and Jeanette's first child, Edward M. Laessig was born in Green Bay on 10 March 1858. Their next three children: Mary, Henry and Augusta, were born in Chicago. A family story that was handed down told how Jeanette would smuggle each baby out of the house to be baptized Catholic a few weeks after it was born, without Ed's knowledge. He was Lutheran and did not want the children baptized Catholic, however records at a little church located near their home was once a German Catholic Church, and verify the family lore. At several weeks of age, each baby was baptized.
The family lived between sets of railroad tracks, and it is believed that is why their location was sometimes overlooked for census taking. The address was 81 West Liberty Street. It is described as the `north side of West Liberty, between South Canal and South Jefferson' and 'N.B. Mitchell is the street one block south of Liberty', in a Chicago city directory of 1860-1861. That address today, and since 1909, would be 550 W. Liberty Street. The directory also stated that Edward worked at J.C.W. Bailey & Co. as a laborer 1865 - 1866 edition.
Birth records indicate that the family relocated to Green Bay, Wisconsin by the year 1867 when daughter Philomena "Minnie" was born. Cornelia, Fred, Frank and Charles were likewise born in that area. Son Louis, "Stoner", daughters Julia and Anna were later born in Marathon County, Wisconsin where the family relocated to Wausau for a number of years, then to Webertown (Weber), a small settlement on the Big Eau Pleine River, on the north side of the river. A sawmill, Catholic Church, store, post office and homes were located on the south side of the river.

Oct. 1873, daughter of Joseph Sawyer. She died 13 Aug. 1907. Frank then married Mary Weber on 29 September 1909. Mary Weber was born 21 March 1887, daughter of Christian and Anna Kaiser Weber.

*Henry Weber, husband of Minnie Laessig, was the son of Michael Weber and Elizabeth Kaiser Weber. Henry's brother Christian Weber was the founder of Weber Settlement. Christian Weber and his wife Anna Kaiser, daughter of Andreas Kaiser and Magdalena Esslinger Kaiser, were the parents of Mary Weber Laessig.

On September 13, 1884, the township of Brighton in Marathon County was divided in two. The new township that was formed was Eau Pleine, named after the big Eau Pleine River that flows through the township and Weber Settlement. In the spring of 1885, Edward Laessig, Sr. was elected the first chairman of the town of Eau Pleine.
Edward was also responsible, at least in part, for the establishment and building of the first Lutheran Church, St. Paul's, just east of where he made his home. Although the church building no longer remains standing, a small cemetery, maintained by the Lutheran Church in Stratford, remains. It is located about a mile and a half north of the village of Stratford.
Edward Laessig worked as a stone mason and laborer for much of his life, and he farmed after moving to Marathon County. He remained in that location for the remainder of his life, passing on 10 April 1915. He was laid to rest in the Webertown cemetery maintained as the Eau Pleine Cemetery by St. Joseph's Catholic Church. As a final choice, Edward converted on his deathbed. Jeanette lived until 13 May 1924. She is buried beside her husband.

Sister Antilia Vandehey, FSPA, 90, died peacefully at 12:05 a.m. on Novemb er 5, 1995, at Vill a St. Joseph, La Crosse. At her bedside was Sister Cl arone Brill, FSPA. Sister Antilia wa s in the seventy-first year of her r eligious profession.Sister Antilia was born to Daniel and Julia (Laessig) Vandehey on Novemb er 1, 1905, in Loyal , Wisconsin, the fourth of seven children, four so ns and three daughters. On November 26, sh e was christened Mildred Marie .About a year later when the Vandeheys had another baby girl, the childs ba ptism was delaye d because Mildred was critically ill with typhoid pheumon ia. At that time their parents prom ised that if Mildred recovered, the n ew baby girl would be named after the Blessed Virgin, an d that Mildred wo uld be presented to Mary to be Mildreds helper and guide. Mildred did re co ver and the new baby was named Estella Mae. From very early childhood M ildred cultivated a d evotion to Mary, especially under the title Moth er of Perpetual Help. This devotion lasted h er entire lifetime.Mildred enrolled in St. Balthasar, now known as St. Anthony School. She l iked school and wa s an excellent student. After completing her sophomo re year in high school, she entered St . Rose Convent on June 27, 1921. S he was invested with the habit and given the name, Antilia , on June 23, 1 923. Because of the fire at St. Rose Convent that year, the Reception Cla ss o f 1923 did not go out on mission until 1925. Sister Antilias first a ssignment was to teac h Grades 1-6 at Genoa, Wisconsin. A challenge, but s he loved it. She professed first vows o n July 2, 1925, and final vo ws on June 21, 1931.Sister Antilia received a Bachelors degree from Viterbo College, with a ma jor in history an d a minor in education, and a Masters degree in histo ry from St. Louis University. She di d post graduate work at Stout Instit ute, Menomonie; Marquette University, Milwaukee; and Cath olic Universi ty of America, Washington, D.C.Continuing in the teaching profession, she served for fifty-one years in e lementary and secon dary schools and colleges in Iowa, Minnesota, Orego n, and Wisconsin. Illness terminated he r teaching career in 1975. Upon r egaining her strength, she served as librarian at St. Patri ck School, Spa rta. In December 1982, she moved to St. Rose and worked at the Viterbo Co lleg e Fine Arts Library. In 1984, She served as receptionist at the new ly -opened Franciscan Spi rituality Center.From 1985 until her retirement to Villa St. Joseph in 1993, Sister Antil ia served as an assis tant in the FSPA Archives. Because of her understan ding of history, her excellent organizati onal skills, and her professiona lism, she was a valued associate in the significant work in t he archives.Sisters remember Sister Antilia as an amiable, peaceful, positive, prayerf ul religious who wa s a devoted community member. She loved to sing, to r ead, and to sew. She had a wonderful s ense of humor; she enjoyed art a nd sports. She treasured her years at St. Rose Convent, "a b eautiful hom e". She cherished the many opportunities in the spiritual, intellectual, a nd soci al arenas she experienced at the motherhouse.
