    Obituary:
Gerald E. Heckel, age 70, died Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at Parkside Care Center in Little Chute. Jerry was born in Appleton on October 4, 1940, to the late Harold and Helen (Van Gumpel) Heckel. Jerry proudly served his country in the U. S. Navy. After completing his military service, he worked at Riverside Paper in Appleton. He then worked as Lead Man in the boiler room at St. Elizabeth Hospital for 13 years, until his illness forced his retirement in 1983.
Jerry loved old cars. His pride and joy was his 1947 Willy's Jeepster, which he displayed in local car shows. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, and playing cribbage.
He is survived by three daughters: Tammy (Dave) Dohr, Menasha, Jean Ann (Scott) Lemke, Kaukauna, and Kathleen (Brian) Legare, Appleton; one son: William Heckel, Iron Mountain, MI; five grandchildren: David Jr. and Alyssa Dohr, and Seth, Noah, and Adam Legare; three sisters: Joan (James) Van Mun, Kimberly, Mary Hinkens, Fremont, and Nancy Swanson, Appleton; two brothers: Robert (Patricia) Heckel, Appleton and Charles (Deborah) Heckel, Seymour. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother-in-law Romy Hinkens.
A Funeral Service for Jerry will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 18, at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Mark Pluimer officiating. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Interment, with full military honors performed by American Legion Post 33, will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Parkside Care Center, and to Dr. Meyer for the compassionate care shown to Jerry.
