    Sister Fidelis

    Obituary:
Sister M Fidelis (Gertrude) Gossens of the Humility of Jesus, passed away Monday September 27, 1993 at the age of 88. She was the daugther of Mary (DeCleene) and Herman Gossens. Sister Fidelis was born on December 19, 1904 in DePere, Wisconsin. She later moved with her family to Kimberly, where, as a young woman she came in contact with the Franciscan Sisters at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. After working in the Hospital there for some time she joined the community March 2, 1922, in St. Louis, missouri where she trained as a nurse at St. Anthony Hospital. Her first assignment was in the dietary department and this led to a BS in dietetics from Fontbonne College in St. Louis. From there she was sent for a Masters degree in public health at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where she saw the devastating lives of the inner-city poor. Back then there were no social agencies around to help. Sister Fidelis has lived a lifetime ahead of her times. Long before holistic medicine was valued by the medical establishment, Sister Fidelis was meeting the medical, psychological and spiritual needs of the poor in a Milwaukee clinic she founded in the 1930's. Sister Fedelis taught briefly at the Marquette University College of Nursing in Milwaukee before being called to St. Michael Hospital where she also served as director of nursing service and personnel. Then, in 1938 she became director of St. Michael Hospital Clinic. Those were the Depression years when so many people were out of work and had no place to go for healthcare for themselves and their families. So she began providing medical care to poor unwed mothers through the outpatient department. Services soon expanded to include low-income families in need of maternity services and a new clinic was born. It would add 25 services in years to come. A need that quickly became apparent to Sister was a alcoholic treatment program, one of the first hospital-based. Marriage and family life counseling were provided early on and later psychiatric and pyschological were added. In 1947 Sister was appointed administrator of St. Michael and local superior. Before she was able to complete her term, she was elected as Assistant Provincial Directress and moved to the Motherhouse in Wheaton. She served two terms as Assistant and then a six-year term as Provincial Directress. She was instrumental in founding the first foreign mission of the American Province in Santarem, Para, Brazil and later spent seven months there working in the clinic and watching the efforts of her vision become a reality. In 1968 Sister volunteered to serve at the Generalate in Rome and spent two years there. Upon returning she served as procurator for the Brazil mission until her retirement to quiet years of prayer and contemplation. She is surived by brothers Joseph (Marie) Gossens, Norbert Gossens, Rene (Norma) Gossens, sister Cecilia (Frank) Brooks and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, brother Arthur (Ole), (Kate) Gossens, sisters Sister (Catherine) Illumina Gossens and Agnes (Fred) Never.

    Obituary:
Sister M Illumina (Catherine) Gossens of the Humility of Jesus passed away April 26, 1990 at the age of 83. She was the daugther of Mary (DeCleene) and Herman Gossens. Catherine (Sister Illumina) Gossens was born February 11,1907, in DePere, Wisconsin. In 1918 the Gossens family moved to Kimberly. In July, 1923, Catherine entered the Franciscan Sisters in St. Louis, where the motherhouse was then located. In 1929, she took her final vows and also received an R.N. from the St. Anthony's Hospital School of Nursing. She later (1937) received a B.S. in education from Mount Mary College in Milwaukee. In 1933, Sister Illumina came to Milwaukee to work at St. Joseph's Hospital. She stayed there 20 years, 14 years as night supervisor, one year as medical nursing unit supervisor, and five years as supervisor of the obstetrics department. Next, she returned to St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Louis, where she was supervisor of the obstetrics department from 1953 to 1961. In 1961, Sister Illumina returned to Milwaukee, this time assigned to St. Michael Hospital (which was founded in 1941 and moved to the present site in 1957) as nursing service director. Sister Illumina became president of St. Michael in 1964. She held the position for eleven years. During her tenure, the hospital grew dramatically, to 405 beds with the addition of the north units, and in programs, services, medical staff size, quality and reputation. Like her father, all four of her brothers, a sister and several nieces and nephews, Sister Illumina, in 1973, was for a short while an "employee of sorts" for Kimberly Clark. She spent a day at a studio in Chicago filming a 30-second TV spot for Kimbies disposable diapers. She and two 10 month-old babies were the "stars" of the commercial, which was subsequently aired many times. Sister Illumina received a substantial talent fee for her day's work, which she divided between the building fund for the north addition and a fund for retired Franciscan sisters. Sister Illumina lives in community with three other Wheaton Franciscans in a small home on 25th Street, across from the hospital. Because she often works evenings and weekends, she finds time on spring and summer days for her two favorite leisure pursuits, fishing and gardening. Her large fruit and vegetable garden is varied, weedless and productive! One summer morning, Sister Illumina paused after several hour's work in the garden, to reflect on her life and the joy and satisfaction she finds in what she is doing. "I am very fortunate to be still a partner in the Lord's work," she said. "Although I have always been happy in my choices to become a nun, and to go into nursing and hospital administration, I think the time I have now to be with people when they are sick and afraid and to listen to them and pray with them is the greatest luxury I have ever enjoyed." She is survived by brothers Joseph (Marie) Gossens, Norbert Gossens and Rene (Norma) Gossens, sisters Sister (Gertrude) Fidelis Gossens, Agnes Never and Cecilia (Frank) Brooks and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, Mary (DeCleene) and Herman Gossens, brother Arthur (Ole) (Kate) Gossens, brother-in-law Fred Never.

    Life,s Clock
The clock of life is wound but once and no man has the power to tell just where the hands will stop at late or early hour. To lose one's wealth is sad indeed. To lose one's health is more. To lose one's soul is such a loss as no man can restore. The present only is our own. Live, love, toil with a will. Place no faith in tomorrow for the clock may then be still.
We will sadly miss you. Love your family and friends.
