    John W. Powers, prominent in local and state banking circles, died in his sleep at his home, 433 South Commercial St at an early hour this morning. He succumbed to a heart attack. Suffering with a cold, Mr. Powers remained away from his duties as cashier of the First National Bank yesterday, but on retiring in the evening stated that he would return to work toda y. Mrs. Powers discovered the lifeless body at about 7 o'clock this morning. Mr. Powers, who was 43 years of age, was a World War veteran, having served in the United States Navy. He was born in Unity, Wisconsin, coming to Neenah in 1912. Since that time, with the exception of the time he served during the war and a brief period of employment at the First National Bank in Appleton, he had been associated with the First National Bank of th is city. He was named cashier in 1925. Headed Bank Group - Mr. Powers was a past president of Group 3, Wisconsin Bankers' association secretary of the Neenah club, secretary of the St. Margaret Mary church, president of the Twin City Clearing House association, and secretary of the City Bowling association. He was also a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and a member of the Catholic Foresters.The survivors are the parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Powers, Sr., Unity; a sister Mrs John Hein, Unity; the widow and two children, Marjorie and James. Funeral services with a Solemn High Mass will be conducted at 10 o'clock Fr iday morning at St. Patrick's church by Rev. Joseph VanBogart, pastor of St. Margaret Mary church. Burial will take place at Oak Hill cemetery. Pall bearers will be members of the Knights of Columbus. The death of Mr. Powers takes from the community a citizen whose life and influence had be en always kindly, helpful and constructive. Always interested in all phases of the civic, social and religious life of the community, he gave free ly of his time and his service in many enterprises. He was a man of that friendly spirit which begets friendship, and he will be greatly miss ed by a large circle of friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Powers, with Solemn High Mass, will be conducted at St. Patick's church at 10 o'clock Friday morning. Re v. Joseph VanBogart will officiate and burial will be in Oak Hill cemeter y. Pall bearers will be E.M. Hatton, Dr. J.M. Donovan, John Mayer and Henry Jung, all Fourth degree Knights of Columbus, of which Mr. Powers was a member. The body was removed from Sorensen's chapel to the home, 4 33 South Commercial St. this afternoon. Members of James P. Hawley Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will go in a body to view the remains this evening.

    James R. Powers, who died on August 27, 2015, was born in Neenah on June 30, 1929 to the late John and Alma (Bredendick) Powers. Following high school he graduated from Ripon College and served in the Army as an officer. A part of his term was served in Korea from 1952-53. He was then employed by Bergstrom-Gladfelter Paper Company in the Employee Relations field, retiring in 1991. He was united in marriage to Mary "Mickie" Smits in De Pere on October 31, 1964. They were blessed with two sons: John (Illa) and Michael (Patti).
    Besides his sons and wife, Jim is survived by two granddaughters: Cassandra and McKinzie. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marjorie (Richard) Hoffman.
    For many years, Jim was very active as a volunteer with many local service organizations as well as his church.
    A Memorial Service for Jim will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 200 N. Commercial St., Neenah, Rev. Paul Holte officiating. A visitation will take place at the church from 9:00 A.M. until the hour of service.
    In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Paul Lutheran Church or SOAR (ARC)Fox Cities - Campership Fund, in Jim's name.
